"There are fewer than 30 men in the world qualified to drive Formula 1 - a mere half-dozen, perhaps, to win. At this moment, I am inclined to think you are not one of them." He really proved Sr. Manetta wrong! Image Unavailable, Please Login
Due to a knee injury suffered in the Korean War, Garner was not able to race professionally but he did dabble in team ownership notably in sports car racing and his team American International Racers which entered Lola T70s for drivers Ed Leslie, Lothar Motschenbacher, Scooter Patrick and Dave Jordan with some good results, notably a second overall in the 24 Hours of Daytona. Garner was a regular in the paddocks in the late 60s and early 70s. Garner was always known as a very accommodating team owner and my sister got a picture of him in the back of a limo as he headed out of the Sebring paddock (must have been 1970) when he told the driver to stop the car so she could get a picture. RIP. BHW
He did race off-road for a few years in the southwest and in Baja, running a modified Olds 442 at least one time!
Sad...RIP Pete Aron. He was one of the few in the movie who could really drive the single seaters properly, unquestionably the key actor in the greatest racing movie ever made... James Garner - Biography - IMDb MS
