"Hulme" or "Hume"?

I acquired a set of excellent videos from the U.K. called "A Gentleman's Motor Racing Diary" which features a fair amount of footage about a certain 1967 World Driving Champion from New Zealand, generally driving Brabham sports cars in British races.

But throughout the videos, the narrator refers to the driver as Denny "Hume", which is a pronunciation that I have heard before. The man's name is spelled "Hulme", and I always assumed that it was pronounced the same way.

Is there some vagary of Kiwi English that perhaps the "L" is silent and that "Hume" is indeed the correct pronunciation? Or is this narrator making the same mistake repeatedly?
