Or the next best thing: A truckload of spare batteries, to be swapped in every checkpoint.

Probably several trucks, support trucks are the norm for the top teams in the rally.

Ridiculous article with no understanding of electric batteries and the environment. Its not zero eco impact if it runs on batteries, its simply creating environmental harm else-ware.

I codrove the first hybrid rallycar in N America for Toyota Canada. The problem w/ electric cars and rally are spectators, workers, media and perhaps other ralliest's safety. The issue is they are too quiet for less controlled racing 'venue'. Spectators and media outside controlled spectator areas moving around to get the best vantage points get accustomed to hearing the roaring gas engines and anti-lag explosions to warn them when a car is approaching, then they move to find a silent car barrelling down on them. Rallydrivers and codrivers who wreak or break down still wearing helmets to display their warning triangles per rules cannot hear the silent cars approaching to be in safe spot when it gets there. Best solution is to require electric or hybrid cars run a siren on stages but its pretty silly and could get confused as a course opening or closing car.

I would like to add, I do not have a problem with electric/hybrid/alternative cars. Just be honest, don't babble "zero emissions" when its not.
