I may be outing myself here...but any NASCAR fans? If so, who is your driver? Me, I'm a huge Clint Bowyer fan and can't wait for him to take over Tony Stewart's ride next year.

They've lost me as a fan due to actions of the past few years, its built up to a point I really don't care.

Shame, as it was the best racing in the world.

I still some what follow it just because of the people I know who work as drivers or crew.

We've had a thread each year for some years if you look a little farther down. :)

My Porsche has a special Dale Sr. Number 3 licence plate that is no longer made, but grandfathered.

we are danica fans on this site generally. looks, speed, results...she's got it all!

at one point we had fairly robust debate and participation regarding nascar but I think many of us believe it is a shadow of the series it was and we have mostly moved on.

I follow it half the time. Don't care for the restrictor plate tracks at all or the half miles on TV which are available locally and in person. Love the road course races. Wish they would use the whole track at the glen. Fingers crossed for Jimmy Johnson to get a 7th championship and then retire in one piece. GTS Bruce

I admit I am also a Danica fan. It, of course, has nothing to do with her abilities as a race car driver.

you won't find many fans of danica's here. I was just joking. she is fairly attractive w/ the exception of the man hands and arms...just not much of a wheel.

seems to be paid well despite her inability to race. good work if you can get it:)

  12. Uh-oh.... Here we go.... :D

    ('hafta...it's genetic )

(edit: what model headlight and grill stickers they gonna let Ferrari use? :p)

  13. Not much of an arse either...methinks her legs bypass that and are attached straight to her spine. At least per the original bathing sh'uit (contraction) way back when... :D

It's a joke anymore. Back in the Petty, Pearson, Roberts, Allison, ... days it was whoever cheated best won. Now it's basically IROC racing, but with a bias to the teams with the most money. Not much point in racing if they throw a yellow every time a fly lands on the track. IMO, it was OK into the 90's but has really taken a turn south since (no pun intended). I still give the guys credit for being able to drive, but it's just a show anymore. Not really racing, well, maybe the last 3 laps after the final caution which is the way it seems to end most of the time.

Some of the situation is forced, but others they've made themselves.

Finin' Denny Hamlin for making genuine racer talk about the gen 6 talk at Phoenix has caused drivers to pause when asked any real question, bit their lip, and lie with a canned response. Not worth watching any interview whatsoever. This destroys the pre-show/post-show experience, as its all canned blather.

On top of this, they are managed by social media, they read the social media response, then make decisions. The problem, is the people who take to their twitter/facebook/whathaveyou, are the lazy sun of a guns who don't really care, they are slacktavists, not fans. So they are trying to herd the wind with their decisions, instead of planting and growing deep rooted trees. They are trying to improve their appeal to a set of people who will never really care, and in so doing, they drive away those who might. Thats like me going around putting on high heals and a dress hoping to attract a large amount of positive attention from other men.

Then they've removed the ride height rule, and the last aspect of "stock car" is lost. The ride height let me see how a driver was doing. Now all I see is downforce and horsepower. Perhaps it lets the lesser pay/name drivers do better, but only the sound is still exciting, not the car. I just go to qualifying now to get my fill of the V8 scream, but frankly, the way the car gets around the track is very boring now. Its glued and grip, no brakes are being used anymore at Charlotte.

Then they've made the season pointless, no reason to follow the points, results or races. Everything keeps getting "reset".

I get to drive karts with a lot of the up and comers as well as the vets; I have a pretty good idea of who has it, and who doesn't. There is an increase in the who doesn't making it into cup. The depth of the field is shrinking. Experience helps, and the new ones improve, but its a different skill set, each time they get in a situation they haven't been, their natural reaction falls short of what should of been done. A lot of the old grid are extremely impressive when dropped into a new situation.

Unfortunately, their social media and interview smackdown is going to have very very long lasting effects, you can't just reverse a position like that, and get driver's acting natural again.

Oh, and the Daytona 500 pole winner for the past four years? No way it happens to be the driver with a planned media blizz already filmed and made up.

  18. 'Gettin' off topic a bit but I've been on line 18 years now and have less than 1000 posts on Tentenths, the, to me, premiere racing forum. To this day, I have yet to understand the significance of # of posts.

    What it is???

    Well stated.

Absolutely, NASCAR has become the racing version of professional wrestling with scripted
outcomes that guarantee the most melancholy results that will bring them the most media
    (and social blah-blah-blah) attention.

It keeps going back to when NASCAR was really on a slippery slope and the question became
"Is NASCAR a sport or show?".

When they put a camera and microphone in the face of drivers, team owners and others,
each and every one of them said "Show". Now, some said "Show" with a begrudging smirk
but others whom had drank the NASCAR Kool-Aid stated it with absolute conviction knowing
full well that if they didn't, the heavy hand of NASCAR would come down on them.

Some subtle digging in the communities which host NASCAR might reveal how the events
themselves are permitted by municipalities. Sporting events are permitted as such and
governed by sporting commissions. Whereas entertainment events are permitted and
regulated as such. My bet is that NASCAR events are permitted as "entertainment"
in the eyes of the law and therefore do not come under the regulation of sports commissions.

The way you guys tell it, sounds like the federal government should ask some questions to straighten out and clarify if it is really a sport or a show. Why wouldn't NASCAR be held to the same standard as MLB?

  21. Because it's not baseball. ;)

    LOL!

True. But at some point it matters as a "national interest".

Opening an investigation (and the resulting can of worms it would cause) wouldn't be
as simple as one might think. NASCAR has long tenticales and trot out their team of
attorneys at the first blip of trouble on their radar screen.

Taking the website NASCARnomiics.com (NE: Racingnomics.com) as an example, the
sites which basically got down to the brass tax of how NASCAR runs its business and the
author Andrew Maness whom basically laid it all open for anyone interested enough to see.

NASCAR was so incensed that they made Maness rename the site, Racingnomics.com,
which shifted focus away from NASCAR and their little peccadilloes and instead shined a
light on all of racing but still with particular attention to NASCAR because, let's face it,
they're the 900lb gorilla on the block and making the most noise.

Still, even after forcing Maness to rename the site, NASCAR wasn't happy by his reporting
facts about their sagging TV ratings and declining ticket sales in particular which didn't
go down well in the fake wood paneled walls in Daytonner.

Imagine someone got enough gumption and went directly to the source of where NASCAR
does business locally. Lofty attendance figures? Go to the local permitting office and see
what the fire marshall actually allows. Question if their event is classified as a sport or
entertainment? Well, events are given permits for those too all on file in local permit offices.

And, if legally speaking, NASCAR is legally not classified as a sport well, jeez, that may
    just be a problem.

Fascinating stuff. Thanks for sharing it.

But that is one guy with a lot to lose ; )

It's all about if it is a sport or sports entertainment as you conclude IMO. If the latter, then by definition it is designed to entertain, not achieve a bona fide winner. People should know what they are paying for or watching.

This soap box business is fun! ; P
