Your book is out of date. With the number of Porsches made since 1999, I believe there have been more air/oil/water cooled Porsches made than air/oil cooled ones.
Watched a program on the Velocity Channel: 50 years of Porsche Started with the first 911 and ended with the 991. Compared each iteration pros and cons. Worth watching. Hope they rerun again soon. Best
It is not a question of how many were made or which are better, Porsch marketing had to always have a '911' after the failure of the buying public to accept a replacement for the 911 in the 70's with the 928. Since then Porsche realized they will always have to have something they call '911' even if it is a different car to Porsche, so Porsche has made new cars since the 911, for example 991,993, 996 etc. but they still need to market them as a 911. If the buying public put up the same stink when the 911 came out we might all be driving 356's, the 911,991, 993, 996 version but '356' is what people who do not look deeper than marketing spin would have called them. Just like calling a 996 or 993 a 911 today, it is just shallow marketing spin. Porsche does not even do that except for advertising. So yeah, Porsche has not made a 911 since 1989 in a lot of people's book including a lot of people at Porsche. On a side note Porsche would have hit 50 years of the 356 a lot sooner if they would have gone that route instead of latching on to 911.
Such marketing was done decades before the first water/oil cooled 911, a/k/a 996 with the 901, 911,930, 964 and 993.
drove the new Targa 4 S, then drove the '69 911S... the new Targa reminds of the '69S as if nothing has changed, there is a lot of the familiarity from nearly 50 years ago, while everything has changed and is new, yet it reminds in some way that car from nearly 50 back is still present
Absolutely correct, That is what I said before and I am glad you agree. "So yeah, Porsche has not made a 911 since 1989 in a lot of people's book including a lot of people at Porsche."
For all of the ones who claim a 911 has to be air cooled, Porsche made a water cooled 911 way before the 996, it was called the 959 which was made from 1986 to 1989 which had water cooled heads and a radiator and considered to be the pinnacle of 911 design. IMHO, the 997.2 is the best looking 911 of all time and it is air/oil/water cooled.
