After 10 long years of restoration my old girl is in paint. Original color Orange Red. This car was raced in South Africa in 59/60 fitted with Carrera Engine and brakes. Must have had a tough life on the track as its taken much work to rework to restore.

Chassis is 84892. Numbers matching with original pushrod 1600 engine. 60mm Carerra Brakes are still with car but Carrera motor long gone Im afraid. She ran in the 9 hour race at Grand Central with a sister car driven by Sarel VanDer Mere in 1960 . Im trying to find more info from my South African contact.

That was indeed one of 27 orange Speedsters to leave the factory (paint code 711). Rare color!

One of these was restored a few years back at Road Scholars in North Carolina: http://road-scholars.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/1958-356-speedster-2010-zuffenhausen-winner.jpg

Jon 5711 Orange Red was a special order color for 57-59... is not only rare but I think really cool on an open car. I have a black Glasspar hardtop ( it was raced in period this way) and will be shod with Alex Biven alloys. Tough decision ahead is interior color- Kardex does not specify . Perhaps oatmeal sq weave carpet with pigskin leather- used this scheme on a 56 Beehive in Fish Silver Blue- really pops

Were those period wheels? Mine were missing - replaced with date-coded Lemmerz.

I can say I've never seen a 356 in that color in person. Glad you're putting it back to the original.

No not period. GT style wheel alloy. Brand new set I bought 5 years ago from Alex Biven with matching baby moons also in polished alloy...Ive got original wheels for concourse.

Also got a wonderful set of 5 Original Rudges but pain to swap as drums have to change.

Color was a brave choice in the beginning. But now its done Im well pleased.

Today we completed tinware , pedal cluster and brake rebuild. Ill post pics later

That is nice. I wouldn't mind having one for longer freeway trips.

Mmm Decisions- Rudges which are beautifully patinea on a fresh resto or Alex Bivens new alloy wheels . Rudges also have downside in that 60mm Carrera Brakes don't fit

What he said, assuming they're the genuine article. (Lots of fakes in the U.S. -- they're expensive trinkets here.)

100% Real Deal. I bought them in 2002 long before the " knockoffs" ( pun intended) were released . A set of date matched Rudges with original spinners and drums in spec are rare as hens teeth. Had them mounted on my previous beehive Speedster for a few years but since these wheels are unrestored I had concerns about safety when doing events. To restore them and crack test requires cold rivet skills which are not easy to find. Rudge wheels also change the handling of the car- these babies are beautiful but very heavy- so I have much to consider.

the number of times at Concourse Im asked " tell me about your Speedster and are the Rudges for sale...." Its a funny world we live in.
