I finalized the purchase earlier today after a PPI and after a week of negotiations, was able to get a substantial discount from the asking price. It has a clean CarFax and the owner had all service records, tool/jack kit, car cover, everything. There were a few problems found, worn tires, torn shifter knob leather, in-opt window switch and an in-opt windshield-washer pump, which are now being repaired at the Porsche dealer in Louisville; so it will be a week to 10 days for I can actually get the car. I can't decide to pay $800 to have it shipped to me or fly up to Louisville and drive it the ~450 miles back home. I love the color combo..you can see photos of my new baby at: 1988 Porsche 911 Carrera for Sale - Gateway Classic Cars

Congrats! I love the brown top and interior as most white cabs I've seen had blue/blue or black/black.

I can't wait to get her. The service manager at the Porsche dealer where the PPI was done said he would buy it if I didn't. The engine and tranny show no signs of leaks and the engine runs strong. Im going with Bridgestone tires.

Great buy, that interior color is rare and I think your car can only go up in value. I bought a low mile 84 model last year locally and truly love it, I feel I bought at the right time as more and more people are realizing what great cars these are. Compared to my 355 I feel happier driving the 911 and not so worried about parking or being constantly looked at if I just want to go to run a quick errand. Seems to be a lot of air cooled 911 folks in Atlanta :)

The owner was a motivated seller and came way down on his asking price once I got the PPI results, even though the needed repairs were rather minor.

Congrats on the new ride. I've been looking for a m491 coupe for a while. There is a couple of cars out there but there asking price is more than some 930's ! Anyone out there want to part with there's ? Would like to have a silver white or blk one with g50 but at this point I would consider any factory TL coupe.

    Regards.

Have let this thread linger, making a short update.

After having many air cooled 911s (and one 996tt, fun but somewhat soul-less) including the coveted 993tt, I have landed a near dream for me:

1985 911 M491 coupe. Silver/black sports seats, Porsche CoA, 62k miles, original paint except for front valence. Did an engine out reseal and tune, major detail and all that. (Tires, brakes, injectors, clutch, alternator, blah blah, perfectionism creep.) I added the Duck Tail, saved the original intercooler 'tea tray' tail. Also added modern AC (works fantastically, Retro-Aire system), RS seat belts, deluxe trunk carpet (OEM Porsche, cut pile instead of gray felt), a 968CS steering wheel (saved 4 spoke unattractive original) plus a Blaupunkt MP3/CD that looks vintage enough. (Have the original 1985 Blaupunkt cassette).

Anyway, to me, this is the ultimate handling, braking and less service-prone 'non' Turbo turbo. Crazy about the car. Only 220 made for 85 doesn't hurt its appeal.

Nice ride. I loved mine. My 84 M491 coupe was rear ended 6 months ago and damaged beyond repair. My insurance company was great. I resold the car to a local racer. I do miss it.

Wow, sorry to hear that but glad you're ok and the insurance didn't compound the problems, which is relatively unusual these days.

To be superficial and nosey, how did insurance company determine the value? I've seen a low of "add $5000 for M491" to "add 40% for M491" (Or 'Turbo Look' in some guide's vernacular.) I've upped my insurance value of late on the car, but always wonder if I'm in the right ballpark.

Wow, Adams, congrats! When you get something, I know it will be special.

Let's hear the story on how you found it (or did it find you!?)

William, you may be the only person interested, but you make me feel all special!

STORY 1: The one I tell my wife. "It followed me home."

STORY 2: The one that happened. I live in a small town (Montgomery AL), surrounded by other smaller towns like everywhere else, so not exactly a hub of classic cars, and especially devoid of European stuff.

In post Boxer depression, I call my former mechanic - since hired to oversee a personal collection - to see if he knows of "anything old, weird or interesting for sale", which I do about twice a year. Usually it's, "Of course not. Have you checked your zip code?" And we laugh like we've never said that before.

On this day he says, "I heard of a car that might be for sale, but it sounds like a rumor. Almost can't be true." Interest meter pegged I ask, "And what might this rumor entail?" He says, very unenthusiastically, "A wide body 911 coupe."

Naturally, we both envision vintage fiberglass wideness attached with hot glue and duct tape hiding various car mishaps with tuner pretenses. He follows up with,

"And it's in a barn in Wetumpka". We both laugh. That's because Wetumpka is a town of like, not many, with an Indian Casino parking lot that could contain half the town's population at any given hour. "Right" we both exhale, "probably not worth pursuit, but here's the guy's phone number."

I call. He's a DEA agent, so has the sense of humor of a diseased cactus. When I probed about the 'wide body' with unintentional skepticism, he picked up immediately. "If you doubt it, I have the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity. Maybe you can question that."

"Well alrighty Joe Friday," I thought, and we planned a time to meet.

I go to a rather modest home, with a few acres out back, to see said barn with car. Yes, a real barn. Not a made up 'barn find' but I live in Alabama and know a barn when I see one: Wood structure, dirt floor, smells of hay and manure, goats in the background for effect.

Mr. Chuckles meets me, says in typical chattiness, "There's the car". It's sitting on 3 decent tires, one getting 'aired up', idling poorly. But oh. My. Gosh. It was looking all metal, all original, dirty as all heck.

We drive down his lengthy driveway, get on the road, sounding better, shifting nicely. Interior amazingly uncut, but enough mildew to film a Tilex commercial. Then the 'Alt' light goes on.

"I think we're about to come to a stop soon" I say. "No way" says Happy the Clown, "that light will go off in a minute". I think not. I know what happens to crusty 911 fan belts, but remain silent.

Headlights go dimmer, car flutters, idles down and comes to a halt. "Guess you were right" says Helium Sniffer, who calls his wife to haul a trailer and take us home. She pulls up in a Porsche Cayenne Turbo. Not lying.

Car gets loaded up. We drive back, negotiate for about 3 seconds, and the deal was done.

Since I got it, I had to find alternate lodging for 3 mice. Fix a few chewed wires. Do the engine out stuff as mentioned. And clean like a crazy person. It's unreal what vermin, dirt dobbers, spiders, wasps, horse slobber and barn dirt can do to a car.

The corner has been turned though, and the car is a blooming delight. A pic of the barn and the current state of affairs below. This is simple, fun, impressive motoring that can be repaired by mortals at its finest. I'd not hesitate to take it cross country, no kidding.

Thanks for asking! Hope this wasn't a bore to the entire rest of Fhat!

Lovely car - never been much of a Porsche-phile, but a 911 of this vintage is interesting to me. They seem out of my range, but maybe I start selling what I have and buying new stuff...

I was never a fan of the Turbo, but loved the factory widebody look. Never realized how rare they are / were.
