what issue do the early 996 TT have ? second gear pop out ? bored. looking for a toy.. is the 997 GT2 worth 3-4X more ? tks
Don't forget leaky coolant pipes. 01 has no glovebox and that owners manual holder under the dash, below the steering column. I would always bang it when I had my 996.1. If you want speed, get a 996tt, software, turbos and suspension and you're done. I got UMW's Stage 1 kit for a little over $3k. My car had an oil tank leak at 19k, so the motor had to come out and I had all the work done at the same time, including welding coolant pipes.
I owned a 2002 996 TT (2nd year model) for over 10 years. Absolutely the most reliable of the 11 Porsche's I've owned The only "issues" I've heard of are 1) 2nd gear pop-out (don't know %, mine didn't have it and guess most that have are fixed by now) 2) Coolant tank can leak...~$150 for replacement part, no biggie 3) Clutch Slave cylinder...I DID replace mine at ~9 years. The only non maintenance item I ever spent $$ on. Would suggest 02 or later; stiffer body and the aforementioned glove box Great very fast but also somewhat boring cars (well in comparison to a GT3 anyway) Best of luck in search Bill
HAHA...so not having a glove box is a good reason to pass on a high performance sports car??? After all, you have two whole back seats(and floor) to store your stuff, not to mention a glove box located between the front seats. Also, I'm 6'4" and 250 lbs. and I have never banged my legs on the manual holder in my MKI 996. Exactly how big are you??? The extremes some people will go to in the name of bashing the 996 is simply laughable....
What is your budget? I just bought a CPO 2012 997.2 Turbo-S and love it!. I have driven it 3k miles so far and can't wipe the grin off of my face.
If you can get a 997 GT2, id get it. It's a much better car although the 996 is an amazing bargain. $50k can get you a very nice Turbo 996. It's not the most exciting car however. So unless you need rear seat, but you still want a bargain, get a 996 GT2. They are $75k but are more exciting, rarer and will maintain value better. If you can spring for a 997 GT2, id get it. The 997 finish is just much much better than the 996. It's nice having a well finished car when you spend that much $$.

That's a tough question. The GT cars are just so much different than the 996tt or even 997tt. Much more involved and much more of an in your face toy as opposed to a great daily driver and grand tourer. Valves on the 997GT2 are aren't too bad right now compared to the GT2 RS or the GT3 variants.
I'm under 6 ft, but for some reason I kept banging that damned holder with my legs. Also, I'm not bashing the 996tt as I have a modded 02 and love driving it around. I was pointing out the difference between an 01 and an 02.
