Hi, I don't know much about the 911 series and really like this one car, can you guys tell me a bit about this model and how much I should expect to pay for one in such condition. Thanks

This is a 911 SC from looks to it early 80's to mid 80's model.

They are around the mid 20's to high 30's depends on condition, engine rebuilt (leakage), compression and interior state.

    Not quite.

    It's a Carrera (84-89). (3.2L)

Actually appears to be an '89 if the wheels are original (6x16 and 8x16 Fuchs; all other Carreras had 6x16 and 7x16 Fuchs).

The tail was a factory option. The 'Euro' H4 headlights were added later - not factory in the US.

Mid 20's to high 30's is in the range; and higher for v. low mileage and excellent condition.

Looks almost identical (except for a few details) to an SC (78-83) (3.0L) which could be low 20's to low 30's.

Other giveaways to it being a Carrera are the seats, front valence and lack of an aerial. The headlights could be the stock H5 units.

I too believe this to be a 84-89 911 Carrera, which is a really sorted Porsche design. Porsche had been making 911's since 64 and 89 was the last year. Then Porsche made 964's but marketed it as a 911.
84-89 Carrera's have electronic fuel injection, which means it will start easy and behave pretty much like a modern car.
All the Porsche updates are in the engine, pretty much a 300-400K mile lower end and a 150K top end. Arguably one of the best engines Porsche made.
If the car is up to snuff, they are pretty low maintenance and get about 25 MPG on the highway.
Kind of heavy, and civilized for 911's not real fast in acceleration compared to modern cars but it will still throttle steer easily, which is part of the charm and fear of these cars.
Overall a pretty inexpensive way to get into air cooled 911 without too much vintage flavor to scare you away.
Good ones, no stories, original paint and under 100K miles, are between $30-40K
If there are issues at all they can drop to the $20K's easily.
Broken head stud, or in need of a valve job $6-8K
    Engine rebuilds, $10-20K
    Transmission syncro's around $4-5K
Just be careful, Drive a few before you buy any.

    No doubt it's a Carrera 3.2

Beautiful car in a very desirable color. The 911 market looks to be finally stabilizing (for now) and a low mileage G50 Coupe in the right color will bring 40-45k easy, with mid-miles or 915 cars from 30-40k, and finally driver quality cars in the high 20's.

They aren't getting cheaper with dozens of air-cooled 911's being bought and shipped overseas daily. The global market is snatching them up. The longer you wait, the more you'll pay.

Unless my eyes and memory deceive me, I would have picked 1985 Carrera: assuming Prussian Blue exterior and 6/7 Fuchs are original while H-5 headlights and turbo third brake light were later added.

Thanks very much guys. Is there a FAQ somewhere that I can learn what to look for when shopping for a 84-89 911?

You can check Rennlist its a good dedicated forum for these cars.

Otherwise if you have any questions I believe we have a few porsche experts on this board.

Thanks! I got to talk to owner, the car is an '87 and was told the spoiler and 3rd brake light came from factory.

Not Prussian blue, but it maybe. (my favorite Porsche color). Nice combo though. These cars are done appreciating in my opinion. The $30k to $40k does seem to be the market. Strong engines, these and the 3.0 SC's go forever before needing an engine rebuild. Only thing and its just me, don't like the whale tail spoiler on non turbo cars. Other then that, looks like a great car.

I prefer 911s without rear spoilers, too. Unfortunately, all my Porsches have been turbos with the exception of three 911s. One was a 996 so it comes with the motorized spoiler, the other a Weissach, so it comes with a spoiler and finally a cab sans spoiler.

H5 headlights make sense then. The light may be a factory OEM part, but I'm surprised that the factory would have installed it when a third brake light should already be inside the rear windshield in 87. Hence, I was guessing an 85 model i.e. model prior to factory-installed third brake lights.

Interested to know what kind of blue the exterior is. For an 87, perhaps Venetian Blue.

That's an '87 Venetian Blue Carrera.

The car has H4 headlamps and recently was resprayed with a recently rebuild engine. It a beautiful car.

I know this car very well ;)

I was alerted to this thread by MHK69 as he recognized my car being discussed on the forum. A bit strange (and kind of cool) to see your own car be the subject of a thread :)

The car is indeed an '87 Carrera in Venetian Blue with Cashmere interior and H4 headlights. It had a recent full engine rebuild (including P&C, 964 cams, Steve Wong chip) at a reputable independent Porsche specialist here in the SF Bay Area.

I agree that the 'whale' or turbo tail doesn't look correct on non-turbo cars. But this is not the turbo tail, it is the Carrera tail and was designed specifically for the non-turbo cars.

My understanding is that the rear window-mounted third brake light was moved to the bottom of the rear window in 1987. The 'periscope' third brake light was used when cars were delivered with a factory-installed spoiler so that the spoiler would not obscure visibility of the light.

And since I now have an excuse to post a couple of more pictures of the car...

Even though the spoiler is factory. Still not a fan. Would be the only reason Id pass, assuming all else inspected well.

There is a lot of these on the market. So you can be picky and pass, assured another will come along. The best advice is look at several, pick the best one you can afford. You can still find low mileage examples, with strong service history, for under $40k.

Completely different car, as in Targa roof, no spoiler. Not a fan of the color, red is my least favorite unless its a Ferrari. Also not a big fan of targa's, but top off motoring is fun. Just doesn't look right with the top off. Anyway, straight and honest, good service history, up to date on service, original paint, under 60k miles and under $40k. And its at a forum sponsor:

1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Lynnwood, Washington | Cats Exotics

Just showing what's out there. Some real nice examples priced right out there. Look around and be picky.
