Having had a few 944's, can say the paint quality is very good. The last one was an original paint 87 944S. Traded my 95 Mercedes S500 for it last year. It buffed up really well. The paint is as good as a 928 or 911 of the era.
The colors and paint are VW/Audi, not Porsche, but are still good. The body, doors, interior, etc. are VERY similar to my old Audi coupe.
Thanks for your input. Just obtained a black 944 with 7,200 miles and while the paint isn't bad necessarily, it isn't great either. Thus, was wondering if paint on these cars was a particular weakness. A good detailing will bring the car around for sure. BHW
I have heard that the paint quality depends on the color. I have heard that some colors are more prone to fading and clear coat peeling than others. Others here may be able to confirm that...or tell me I am crazy.
The solid colors showed some orange peel in the finish. Never noticed that trait quite as much in the metallic colors. Overall, the paint finish was always good on the cars I owned. As mentioned earlier, the cars were built in the Audi factory at Neckarsulm, Germany. These photos were taken in 1985 when we visited the factory. I owned a black '88 944S. I thought the paint showed well. But I didn't drive it much and polished it with a diaper on a regular basis. (Buhler?) IMHO
