I've been restoring Ferrari Dinos for the last few years and I'm always in the 206/246 section. I've always been into Porsches also with my first one some 40 years ago, a 65 SC. I thought I would try something new to restore rather than a Dino, so I drug home a 1958 Porsche Speedster. Today was day 1 of the journey to make it like new again. Hopefully I can get plenty of help here! The car was originally aquamarine with red interior!

Looks like fun... be sure to restore that top frame and windscreen frame, extremely hard to find original ones.

    Aquamarine should look terrific.

I remember when mine rolled off the truck in 2010.

It looks like a good car to begin with. Aquamarine over red will be fantastic.

Damn! Looks like there is going to be a new speedster that's going to steal all the shows! Congrats! I love these little cars. I'm restoring a 58 as well. I'm #84683, metallic silver/black. Your car looks like a nice dry car. It has the wrong steering wheel (I have a correct one if you need). The car looks like a high bow car, though it's kind of hard to tell from the pic. John, thoughts? At any rate, welcome to the club!

I don't know about shows, it is the first 356 Porsche I am attempting. I know very little about them and have been learning as I go, taking it apart. All suggestions are very welcome as I will need good advice as well as parts. Does anyone know the best way to attach to a rotisserie. Should have the rest of the parts off in a couple of days.

I would tell you to ping bullfighter early and often. he went through a painstakingly correct resto of his car. I suspect the process has made him quite expert.

    good luck!!!

Did you attach the rotisserie to the bumper mounts?

Every part has been taken off except the license plate, it's too cool!!! Oh, and the windshield posts as they are frozen in position. I'm deciding whether to put it on a rotisserie for media blast.or mounting castor wheels to suspension points. I was advised against a rotisserie for a Speedster as I was told there is too much flex. Works fine on an open top Dino. Any opinions here?? I see bullfighter used a rotisserie on his.

Wow, great car, great find !!

IIRC Jon you are in/near San Diego...why not make the short drive to Fallbrook and visit CPR, they've done more Porsche restorations than anyone. No affiliation, just thought it would help.

    Jon,

I would visit John Willhoit of Willhoit Restorations Willhoit Auto Restoration. He is one of the best and is a really nice guy. There are some tricks to doing a 356 body such as factory alignment holes in the hood hinges etc. Also tricks on aligning doors etc. I would also recommend taking some of the original paint (polish first) that's been uncovered to use for matching.

Only problem with media blasting is that it "blasts" away all the original lead. So you will have to fuse in new metal or use urethane filler to set your gaps at 3/8" Your car doesn't look to be rusty, so that's a great start. Media blasting is great to get the original undercoating off and clean up the suspension
