I just brought home a 1987 930 turbo, and noticed that the owners manual and every other one I have seen has a small turbo boost gauge as the lower part of the tachometer, mine doesn't, anyone know why?

The original gauge probably broke and the owner replaced it with a Carrera tach.

Edit: It may be a SC tach because I don't see the upshift light.

agreed. that is not a 930 turbo tach. the turbo has the boost guage on the bottom as well as a higher redline than the 3.2.

is there a possibility that someone had an m-491 turbo look and did an engine swap?

    stranger things have happened.

I thought of that, but the carfax shows the 3.3L flat 6 engine

I have an 88. That tach is really odd. Can't imagine someone throwing in a non turbo tach...

As to the serial number, I thought turbos have a B in the vin?

    What's the title say?

There is a "B" in the 5th position....VIN decoder shows it as a Turbo...It appears that for whatever reason someone switched out for a non turbo tach... Thats the only explanation I can find.

Even the 13th digit is a "5" which is the designation for a turbo coupe.

Just bought it today...Don't have the title yet.

do you have the factory wheels? the 9's are particularly valuable. it looks like the wheels are the linea corsa or the like. otherwise, it looks quite stock.

The wheels look like they may be Zuffenhaus, possibly TruDesign or Lindseys. The VIN points out the car as an 88, not 87.

The VIN Decoder I used has the "H" as a 1987 model year

Red Book has WP0JB for Aug 1987-July 1988 production, so I'm concluding it should be a 1988 MY car.

So someone was a cheap skate & put in a easily available tach Vs the correct unit. I have seen much worse from many tight wads.

How about a wastegate dump pipe on a 930 made out of flex tube from a hardware store. How about permetex on a Ferrari Vs using the correct gasket. How about carpet remnants used Vs real floor mats in a Gullwing SL. Red tape over a broken Aston LED taillight lens. The list is long & distinguished.

They all say they are car guys... But stunts like this tell the story.

Not really sure where you are getting your information, but everything I have looked at shows the 10th digit is the year designation...Mine has an "H" which indicates a 1987..."J" would indicate a 1988......Don't know how Red Book can determine that from the first 5 letters?

According to Porsche that is a 1987 Turbo. The Red Book is hardly gospel. You just need to source the proper tach and get on with enjoying the car. Part # 930.641.302.01 No longer available new.

Ahh, found it. Strange, RB did not list WP0JB... for Aug 87-July 88 production, but has it for 1986 and 1988. It does state 10th digit H for 1987 and J for 1988. However, it appears the omission of WP0JB... was not fixed in the current edition.
