997.1 is 2005-2008
997.2 is 2009-2012

No, that's incorrect. The new DFI engines were introduced in 2009 (I have a 2009). No issue of RMS/IMS failure in these engines. 2009 also introduced the PDK (Dual Clutch) transmission.

The base Carrera is quite a nice car. Of course, the S models give you more power.

I've been driving my car as a daily driver since I bought it in May. Have put about 7000 miles on it.

I've seen 997 cars as low as $40k. Of course, price is dependent on condition, mileage, etc.

My bad. As stated above, Base and S 997 changed engines to dfi 09 and the 997 tt also changed to dfi in 2010.

Some folks I know say to go for 997.2 to distance yourself from the IMS issue. Don't know how likely a failure is on the older
.1 models. My 997.2S has been, knock on wood, rock solid. I've put 20 K miles on it in close to 2 years, and it's 39 K miles total. Love it!

I've seen cars like mine (2011 997.2S) online for 60 to mid 70s, depending on mileage, options and geography.

The 997.2 seems to make everybody happy except for the air-cooled diehards. For 60Kish (in LA) you can even get into a 991, a little bigger and more comfortable.

Lol, that's true! ;)
991 has too many buttons for me, but that's coming from a guy who enjoys his 911's seat heaters (bad back) and seat ventilation (hot climate)!! :)

I seem to remember seeing some basic 997.2 coupes (non-S, manual trans, usually black or silver) in the high 40's. S or 4S will likely be more.

It's a lot of car for the money.

From what I understand, the IMS/RMS issue is relatively rare in the 2006-2008 cars (<1%?). But, if you can get into a 997.2, the peace of mind may be worth the higher price that you pay.

It's also harder to find older CPO'd 911s. But, Cars.com shows certified 911s as far back as 2008, which is late in 997.1 cycle IIRC.
Some in the low 50s, which seems like a good deal to me (hey, it's not my money! 😃)

I bought a nicely equipped 997.2 S for mid 50s last year have put about 10000 miles on it and i really like the car.. I also have 991 GTS that i bought new about 6months ago and truthfully the 997.2 feels more nimble ... and smaller (it is)....
they are both great cars..

^ My bias is that you want at least S/4S for the extra HP, PASM, red calipers, etc...T
