I'm thinking since radios were not installed from factory and the head unit is covered anyway, then go for the best you can find. The limiting factor in regard to sound quality may be in the standard speakers if you decide to keep them. Personally, and I know it sounds clichè, I never have the radio on. Too many better tunes to listen to.

A straight through exhaust pipe is by far the best soundtrack. If you decide that you need to change channels it's definitely time to sell the car.

Doesn't those "smart'(?) phones already have all that ?
Why not make it a real old-school experience by learning your way around or just drive to where ever interesting looking roads may lead and throw a map in to glove box, in case you get lost ?
Or will you be considering/needing a back-up camera and perimeter sensors too ? ;)

Well. actually I was just thinking of future searches by others regarding this same subject. I apologize, maybe I should've taken a softer or more humorous approach.
Call me old-fashioned, but in general I feel that most "convenience" add-ons, especially electronic "nannies" to vintage cars are reducing the experience what the car represents and along with all other "cool(?)" features in modern vehicles provide another step closer to autonomous/self-driving vehicles.
Besides, I tend to agree with others here, with a cool and exiting to drive car like a TR, a radio or it GPS capabilities would be, if any, the last consideration for me. I'd rather spent that money on gasoline or other more practical (to me) stuff.
But hey, it's your car and experience, enjoy it the way you feel best. Good luck with your search.

I use Sony with Bluetooth and all the buttons are color change so you can play around with it but I'm in a 360.

For my TR I got a Alpine head unit with a small wireless remote control, that way I could easily change the volume and control inputs without leaning way forward.

I grabbed a Pioneer unit with a remote that you can also customize the color of the display to match the dash and gauges in the car. Even though it's too modern looking for my liking in an 80's era car at least it matches the dash and gauges.
