I received an email from the Old Racing Car company (www.oldracingcar.co.uk) telling me about the latest additions to their stock. Under the slogan "Race Collect Invest" the majority of the cars appear to be "recreations" or "sanctions" (not sure what that means).

Looking at their website, the company appears to specialise in good quality but non original cars with FIA papers and judging by the number marked sold, they have found a successful niche in the market

One of the cars caught my eye as it could be suitable for competition use.

It was built by a Greg Jones in the USA chassis 3731GT and has FIA papers

FIA papers in this case mean very little. At one time the FIA was issuing papers that sort of said that a car was built to "proper" specification but in no way said the car was an original example of what it was a replica of.

While some venues will let pure replica's race many won't and these cars are replica's and IMO cost more to build today then they can be sold for.

Gorgeous car - that blue GTO rep linked looks awesome to me, I would love to own it. Wonder how much they are asking? (not that it matters... I'm broke!)

If I did own it... I would certainly never post pictures of it or discuss it here, never attend any "Ferrari Enthusiast" events with it and never respond to anything the "Ferrari community" ever had to say about it. I love these cars... and don't need the endorsement of the elite to enjoy them.

What I would do is drive the wheels off it and enjoy every minute!

You could buy a nice real Daytona for less.

    Which would you rather own?

Tough call.... very tough call. You know how much I love the Daytona. If we are talking about buying back my old Daytona - then I would do that. A different Daytona, not sure.

My ideal answer of course would be BOTH. I would love to own my old Daytona AND that blue GTO rep. That would be perfect.

So lets look at it a different way. Would I rather own a real alloy 275GTB/4 cam OR my old Daytona and the blue GTO rep. The latter combo, no question. If I had 1 real vintage Ferrari to satisfy that need (and my old Daytona did the job perfectly)... then a great GTO replica would make a fantastic partner to it. It seems that this is the case with lots of guys who own these kinds of replicas.

Honestly, owning a real GTO does not appeal to me that much. What can you really do with it? I know you can vintage race it at lots of events that will not accept a replica, but nobody really does. Yes... they show up and drive it, but they don't really race. Nobody really flogs the old girls properly because they are just too valuable. This is why E-types and Cobra's rule at Goodwood. I know that if I owned a real GTO its staggering value would limit my use of it. Would I drive it to Home Depot? Not a chance. Would I drive a replica to HD? Every chance I got.

The exclusive events that a real GTO could get into? I have no interest at all in attending those.

Hell with that, if I had a real GTO I'd drive it hard, and if wrecked I'd just buy one of these replicas to use for parts :).

Hardly. That video makes my point perfectly. They start 5th and work steadily backwards from there. E-types and Cobras blow past them regularly and vanish into the distance. I've read comments from both Brundle and Hales on racing that GTO and both say they are constantly aware of its value. They never push harder than 8/10 from what I can see. Compare that to the E-type drivers... they are flogging those things to death and RACING (and why not? They are not worth $30M+).

RACING - THAT is what they were intended for.

Note that I do not blame the drivers one bit. If it were mine, I would not even risk it on the track at all.

LOL! Now THAT would be priceless. I can image the massive panties wad amongst all the brethren when a real GTO is wrecked and a replica GTO is butchered for parts to restore it. THEN what is it???? Oh no! A Replireal???? A Realrep???? A GTEO ? The Horror!

You cannot destroy a GTO or LM or many other rare Ferraris. All you can do is reduce it's value by putting a black mark in it's history.

Most GTO's and LM's have been bent many times, some have burnt to ground more than once but they are rebuilt and continue to be correctly referred to as genuine cars.

I would not enter any car in the Goodwood TT as I don't agree that these old cars should be flogged to death to win a pointless "historic" trophy. Brundle and Hales have the right attitude for historic racing and good on them.

BTW: I believe all those E-types are cheating anyway ...

Mr. A.N.? Never! He told me himself: "it is just as they raced them back then, only the sparkplugs are better....".

The only reason they pass the GTO's, is that they are being driven by girlies.

    Regards, Alberto

    Different strokes for different folks.

What I would really like to see is a full on - full tilt - for a championship and $$$ racing series that featured top drivers in 100% accurate fully prepared replicas and/or originals. GTO drivers can run replicas - E-Type drivers run racing prepped real ones and so on. But have all the cars be prepared to the basic standards of the day and allow some "development".

Why? Because watching and driving older cars is WAAAAAAYY more fun! I've drive very quick modern race-prepped Porsches and none of them were anywhere near as much fun nor as rewarding to drive as my old hotrod lightweight 911S track car.

I would rather watch the front of the pack guys pushing hard at Goodwood than any current F1 race. Its just more entertaining. The cars slide around, the drivers really work at it and you can see them working at it. Its better racing.

    Massive Aero ruined racing.

    Terry

    PS - I agree the E-types are cheating ;)

I remember in about 1995 collecting that car from the owner's home and driving it 160kms to Bob Houghton's workshop for maintenance, fabulous experience but the most uncomfortable car I've had to sit in and at 5"10' I'm not that tall. So in the end I hated it, and declined the opportunity to deliver it back home !

    Totally agree.

But isn't the right solution to make modern racing more interesting by banning areo than torturing these old cars?. Then the cars will slide around and be fun again and these old cars can return to proper historic racing where winning at all costs is not an option, ie. they actually like the old car.

It can be done with modern racing if somebody had the balls to create a series.

i agree with your post. i also agree that the e-types are just a bit more robust today than they were in the day. in the states, the donovan guys built some fast, fast cars!!!

    Thanks Jim

The car has MSA issued papers from 2008 which should confirm a period specification for the car but the accuracy will very much depend on who inspected the car. Unlikely Goodwood would not accept the car to run against originals but other UK organisers take a more relaxed view.

ORC are asking £300k for the car. What do you think it would cost to build ?
