Drove by a company here in Scottsdale that specialises in dealing and restoring rare sports cars, which owns an obscure premises that backs onto Scottsdale airport. The owner is a well known figure in the enthusiasts car world (sounds like 'Hardly Clarkson'). Out front was parked one of the first Mercedes CLK DTM cars, of which only 100 examples are being made (much rarer and more desirable than a SLR). I have a friend, recently diagnosed with MS, whom I am trying to keep cheered up, who has an interest in this car. Seeing it parked, I called him and told him to drive over to take some photos. Half an hour later, he pulled up, and as he was attempting to get out of his car (very difficult when your legs don't work very well), the owner of the business came running out with a very unfriendly demeanour about him and basically attempted to drive the car away. I asked him if it would 'be ok if my friend took a few photos'?. You could tell that he was 'annoyed' that we even knew what the car was, and asked me how it was that I drove by his building in the first place....!! Rarely have I wished to resort to physical violence as I did right then. Jumping into the car, and trying desperately to close the door, conversing through gritted teeth, he basically started the car up and drove it around the back of his building and then inside, sliding the door shut immediately so we could not see it any further. I can't believe that a grown adult, a so-called fellow enthusiast could be so narcistically inconsiderate and downright verging on rude. What possible harm would be done if we had taken a few photos or, heaven forbid, he had allowed us to have closer look at the inside, or the engine. I have known this man for about 15 years. He was a pr*ck when I first met him, and he obviously hasn't mellowed with age. Why is it that some of the most fortunate people in the world have amongst the worst personality traits? Overall a pretty unedifying demonstration of petulance.

I can't believe it, Harley Cluxson was an SOB in person? I spoke to him on the phone about a car I was interested in one time, and he was very nice. That is terrible that he treated you and your friend that way.

Maybe it is not legally in this country and he was worried about the word getting out. I dunno. Still no excuse to be a prick about it.

Not the first time I've heard of, or experienced personally, similar types of behavior in N. Scottsdale... I just don't get it, either. Oh well, I'm a firm believer in Karma - he'll get what's coming some day. As for your friend, I wish him the best.

We all have our reasons for doing strange stuff and this guy chose to be very territorial. Maybe you caught him on the wrong day. I'd bet if you sucked it up and called the guy and explained why it would be of value to extend some generosity to your friend then the guy would react differently. Give it a try.

    Slooooow down people..........

If I read this correctly, you showed up unannounced. I think you were very presumptuous in thinking he would be receptive to this.

I suggest, in the future, call him and explain the situation. That at least will tell you if he really is a jerk. At this point I'm not sure he wasn't just concerned about who he was dealing with.

Give him the benefit of the doubt.

I was there for this fiasco.

First off, between the 2 of us, my friend and I have owned 20+ Fcars, Lambos, Posches, blah, blah, blah. I started the Ferrari club in AZ.....and this guy has known both of us for 15years.

Second, the car was parked in a public parking lot in front of a building.

There are very few crazies that would actually know what this thing is. At first glance it looks like a CLK that is owned by an NBA player.

If you don't want anyone to see your toys, then don't put them in a public place. When an enthusiast wants to talk to me about something I have, my first instinct is to share........not be a jerk......even if I am having a bad day. And if I knew the person........I would be extra friendly. Half the fun of owning these things is sharing.

The car is legal, so there goes that excuse. It was obviously a case just being a jerk.

I did manage to get some photos and I will be writing an article about the experience in a European magazine. I hope he enjoys the press.

Old car guys are required to attend courses to develope their patented "horse's rear end" manner. I went to a salvage yard once and the owner let me walk around all afternoon with tool box in hand, looking for parts. I went back a few years later and he acted all offended that I wanted to look around again. I had to remind him that he never had a problem before. But he said that people had been stealing things from him. I then said, "Well I haven't stolen anything from you!" But he still refused to let me walk around. I said thanks and walked out. Haven't been back and won't go back. I heard from another guy that had made a deal with the jerk to buy an old Chevy station wagon for $400. When he showed up to pay him, the old jerk said the price was $600. The buyer reminded him the price was $400. Old jerk denied the $400 price. Buyer walked just like I did.

His being an as shole is the reason I wound up with 0854. I was at Monterey
in the pits in front of FNA's tent with 0846. As you may expect there was a large crowd around asking questions. Harley or Handjob as someone in the crowd later referred to him barged in, pushed others aside and screamed:

    "What chassis is this?"

    "It's what remains of 0846" I answered.

"Chris Amon is a friend of mine!!! He told me 0846 burned to the ground!!!
There was nothing left!!!" I opened the 0846 papers and showed him a photo of 0846 the morning after the fire far from burned to the ground.

"That photo's a fake!" He screamed.

"Somehow I don't think The BBC faked that photo." I answered.

    Harley stomped off.

Another member of the crowd asked if he could look at the picture. I showed it to him.

    "Looks real to me."

The new person asked me a number of questions and remarked:
"I have one of these. Want to take a look?"

We walked through the pits and came upon 0854. We looked it over and he asked a lot of questions.

    "Is the transmittion right?"

"Yes see the Le Mans stamps?"

A few months later, totally out of the blue I got a call the gist of which was that I was the one he felt should own 0854.

I told another well know Ferrari personality about Harley.

"Next time you see him pick him up and put him in the garbage like the piece of ***** he is." He replied.

...the sad thing is, He has a wealth of knowledge and experience with Ferraris and other exotics. He could be a really interesting guy to talk to..but he has one big handicap....his personality. His mommy obviously didn't give him enough spankings when he was younger. It isn't THAT DIFFICULT to be pleasant to people....

Of all people, you'd think he'd be the kind of guy that would understand; a real enthusiast.

BTW, I'll take this opportunity to once again remind Napolis that he has an amazing car! :)

I recently purchased my 550 through Algar and contacted the former owner who had purchased the car new in Chicago. I telephoned him, apologized for the interruption, and introduced myself as the fellow who had just purchased his 550. He could not have been more unfriendly if he tried - the WORST experience I've had in talking (or rather trying to talk) with a former owner. I've bought and sold throughout the country, and I could not be more happy to talk with anyone as a new owner of something I've had in the past. The only salvation in this story is that he did keep the 550 perfect, and heck knows I'm grateful for that. Common courtesy is not commonly practiced.

As I am God, tommorow morning I have pre-ordained that he will step into a huge pile of dog crap as he is getting into the car. Then miraculously through my will, the dog terd will burst into flames but put itself out within 2 seconds. Therefore his precious CLK will smell like a flaming dog terd for the rest of the time he owns it. :)
