Scott, There's an interesting interpretation! I hadn't seen that one before. It looks like someone spent some serious time & money to mod what appears to be a two litre car. 'a bit of artistic license with the addition of the horse, the Dino badge & sidescoops, and with the nose job. Hey, just to add fuel to the fire, I did notice that on the cover of Mike Morris' book is a two-point-four litre spyder with a horse on the grille...contrary to what he describes between the covers! Hmmm. It'll be fun when our Fiat Dino wizards weigh in. They most likely will know about the variants and the customs out there. Cheers, Coop
Hi Jim, There were NO Fiat Dino's officially delivered with Ferrari badges. Neighter 2ltr or 2.4. All Ferrari badges were fitted afterwards. In the period of Ferrari prices went sky-high many Fiat Dino's were painted red and had Ferrari badges fitted ( and were also sold for a lot of money...) For the record... Even the (Ferrari) Dino 206 and 246 didn't have ANY Ferrari badges... Even in the official brochure it was stated... The famous words "allmost an Ferrari" The only Dino that became officially a Ferrari was the 308GT/4 by Bertone. Many customers demanded the Ferrari name and the Dino 308 GT/4 became the Ferrari 308 GT/4 Best, Maarten
Your welcome... Thought you might like these pictures. Some literature on the Fiat Dino's. In the first picture in the left lower corner is the mentioned "Mike Morris" book (with the "wrong" emblem). In the second picture some official workshopmanuals with in the right lower corner (blue map) the press-kit for the 2liter Spider. See picture 3 and 4 for contents. . And some more... In the first 3 pictures you see the brochure of the 2liter Spider. Look closely and you will see a lot of pictures of Ferrari's used in it... The fourth picture shows the brochure of the 2.4 Coupé. Same brochure has been published for the 2.4 Spider. Unfortunately i only have copies for the 2.4 Spider. See part 3. . Part 3: Some copies from the 2.4 Spider brochure. As you can see no Ferrari badges were used. In fact the name "Dino" was used only 3 times on the whole car... 1: On the engine valve-covers 2: On the radio-cover 3: On the rear end of the car . Wow, great posts. I guess when I'm ready to buy my Fiat Dino, there's an expert right here to ask. Alberto
I saw the yellow one pictured above today at Cars and Coffee. Talk about timing. Anyway, the only Ferrari badging that looked factory was the Ferrari name cast into the rims. And that's not even badging really. I didn't get to talk to the owner. Does anyone know who did the coachwork on it?
If you mean the yellow "custom" 2 liter Spider you make an very interesting point. It looks to me if this car uses the original Cromodora rims. I have never seen this type of wheel with "Ferrari" cast in it... Only "Fiat" or "Dino". Did you make any pictures of the wheel perhaps? Would love to see it. Even the optional Campagnolo rims had "Dino" cast in it. #1 Optional Campagnolo rims with Dino casting #2 Fiat Dino rim (2 liter Spider) with Fiat Casting #3 Dino246 with Dino casting #4 Close-up of the Dino cast (Dino 246) Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Since we went a bit "of topic" ( Sorry about that Jim...) back to the thread again... How is the progress on your Spider? Looking forward to see an update again! Best, Maarten
When they return from Vacation in Italy we'll head over and check it out. Should be almost done. As an aside should anyone need original Dino Competizione (13inch) wheels we patterned mine and can provide newly cast ones. Best
i think the wheels with ferrari casting were dino 308 gt4 or reproductions. all fiat dinos and early 246's had "fiat wheels". at some point 246's got "dino" wheels. i am looking forward to pics of jim's car. i bought my dino fiat spider 2400 in Catania. jim, there is a fiat dino yahoo group that is a good source of info. is your goal a driver or a very "correct" car?
A few more photos of The Dino Comp 206 to get us back on track. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
U.S.-spec Dinos had three Ferrari identifiers: driver's door jamb D.O.T. build plate, emissions info. panel on the underside of left engine lid drip panel, and Super Shell sponsor plug at the right of the engine compartment, on the frame, under the right-hand edge of the engine lid. My earlier Dino also has a cavallino on the chassis plate on the rear firewall of the engine compartment, on the left side. Fred
Dino Competizione's chassis plate is a Ferrari Plate and car is titled as 1967 Ferrari 206S Dino Competizione.
Jim - I should have looked more closely at the Quail, but how tall are you? In the photos it looks like you are probably the maximum height to fit in Dino Competizione (or is there additional headroom?). I am always interested as I have found that vintage Ferrari's was not the best choice of hobbies for a guy 6'3"...
Bummer, guess then that I won't be driving it any time soon Do you modify the seats on your other cars in order to fit? I would imagine most of the racing models were designed for shorter drivers.
I located a company called Paintworld in New Haven Conn and noticed they were listing a Ferrari color. One of my projects is building model cars so I decided to order a can of this from Paintworld presuming it was going to be red. Surprise surprise when I let go the first spray it was yellow. Now a good yellow is VERY difficult to find and for my money this was it. Not only did I paint my model 250 California with it but also my California Kit car which I have been building for the last five years..As far as I can tell it really is the "real thing". If anyone is interested I can give them the paint code for this color.Give it a try. I think you will like it and it could save you a lot of time and money. just one man's opinion tongascrew [email protected]
Fred, Question, do you refer in your post to a (Ferrari) Dino 206 / 246 or to Fiat Dino's? Did Fiat Dino's get a buildplate referred to Ferrari when imported to the US? Thanks! Maarten
Great thread. Enjoyed looking at the car at Qail. Jim has done a great job restoring these cars, and he drives them, which is what they are intended to do. Art
