I LOVE the look of the black Daytona. i have a watch fetish and this one set me on a research mission. i contacted simon chambers at bamford ltd. in london ([email protected]). i have determined that the black Daytona has a few major issues which will likely prevent me from acquiring one.

firstly, there is the issue of cost.
this was pointed out earlier in this thread by jam1. however, he computed the cost incorrectly. the cost for a modified used daytona according to my email correspondence with simon chambers is £14,000. this converts to $22,900. Figure paying around 10% import duty and the price becomes $25,190.00 (jam1 said the price in dollars was $19K). add a few bucks for shipping and you have a very expensive time piece. a new, modified daytona costs even more. by way of comparison, the unmodified, black face daytona with a ss case can be purchased for anywhere between $7,000.00 and $10,000.00 NEW, with warranty.

there is the issue of warranty.
when a rolex is modified, it will no longer be warrantied by rolex. not a big issue, as pointed out previously; any competent watch repair shop can repair a used rolex. so it makes sense to get the customized black daytona from bamford in the used version, not the new. bamford will warranty the watch for 2 years.

there is the issue of durability.
the watch is modified by coating the ss case. the coating can come off if the watch is bumped or hit hard enough with a hard object. then the watch has to be sent back to bamford for a re-coating.

there is the issue of resale.
how much will the modified black daytona be worth when you want to sell it? the standard, unmodified daytona will likely appreciate with time. i bet the black modified watch will lose 50% of its value the day you take delivery. as it gets scratched with wear, the value will probably go down.

there is the issue of design.
while the watch is a classic, it has no calendar. for me, a calendar is an essential feature on a daily wear watch.

summary analysis:
not a good deal!!!!
i love the watch, but i will pass on the purchase.

hey photonut,

contact daniel at projectxdesigns you might get a better price there. actually you can configure online and see what price you get.
i was very happy with their service. the watch is DLC'd and does not scratch at all. i gave a few dings in it already and the DLC does not come off. actually DLC is harder than the stainless steel it covers so in fact it is protecting the watch.
furthermore, the process is completely reversible.
while being a watchnut, i am not a true rolex fan. the black deep sea changed that for me.
the deep sea is so much more than the daytona due to its size. it's rather a hefty watch and wears larger than a ROO and it's got a date window. far more useful than the daytona's chrono that will most likely hardly ever be put to use.

as for warranty, rolex will not touch the modified watch. nothing easier to repair though than a standard rolex mechanism.
projectx will give you a 2 year warranty and the stand behind their product.

i am in no way affiliated just a happy customer of a cool product.
