i remember few years ago two men in mount waverley robbing a couple's house, tide the husband up, tries to rape the wife. the husband somehow untied himself, went to the kitchen grabbed a knife and stabe one men (who was dead later) and another men ran on foot.

end result. the guy who was being robbed was charged and convicted with man slaughter.

the law and the culture of Australia has always believed the US system of Gun Law = completely, utterly barbaric

I find that complimentary. What was the German Gun Law of 1938? Hitler loved strict gun control, no Jews could own them. Go figure. Let's allow the guns to be only in the hands of politicians and governments. No thanks. I hope it all works out for you in Australia, I really do (no sarcasm intended). Our country is a fairly new experiment as far as colonial revolutions are concerned. The people that created this place had first hand accounts of centrally planned corruption and put a clause in our constitution to see it doesn't happen again.

mate, i was born in China. i can tell you, 99% of the citizens there wish they could own guns! their government will be no where as corrupt, people's properties could be taken at will, house been bulldozed down because the local government wants to sell the land to developers.

like wrxmike said, we, aussies really do live in a lucky country (except for the focker bureaucrats and idiot union bosses), we don't really know the other side of the wall.

probably not, but we don't always really know the truth, even on that shooting case. why would this kid go and shoot both parents?

i'm not saying they should or should not ban guns. because it simply go much deeper than the equipement, but the people, and their culture.

only in USA cinemas, when they are playing action movies, people actually cheer, clap when there is a massive explosion (kills bad guys) or main villain being shot, how do i know? i accidently downloaded a few (many) hollywood blockbusters that was somehow filmed in a cinema.

it's rooted in their culture and in every american. can't change it. much like most chinese born to think they are some how "slaves"

Hi Hawkeye, hope all has been well mate. :)

Are Americans really THAT paranoid about not owning guns? I just can't seem to get my head around it as to why everyone wants a gun to protect themselves from the "government."

WTF is the government going to do to you or America? Sweet FA I reckon. :)

if all I have to do is put up with bureaucrats and idiot union bosses to maintain our way of life then so be it, we don't have people jumping off buildings due to the oppressive conditions under which they are employed

Mate, people jump off building in China for all sorts of reasons. Foxconn's work conditions is actually pretty good in China standards. China's labour law is actually getting quite strict to a stage that it is some what worse than Aus. if it wasn't for the cheaper labour, China wouldn't be selling sh** to the rest of the world.

but that's a completely different topic, and too hard to explain on the web.

    Don't talk ****.

Semi-Automatic rifles were legal to own in oz till 1988 and it was still legal in Tasmania when Martin went cookoo.

You didn't need to have a gun licence if you shot on private property and you could carry guns in public.

Our gun laws were actually on par with America till the 80's.

google milperra massacre, that's what started the change in gun laws in Australia.

It's only "utterly barbaric" for clueless Gen Y idiots.

Why would having a gun stop the government being corrupt and bulldozing your house? Seriously, I'm after an answer because the only answer is NO it won't. The government has an army at it's disposal ... they win, end of story.

American's (and Chinese it appears) are delusional if they think owning a gun makes any difference to their government screwing them when they want to. Laws are your only protection, not guns.

Craig's list ad--Read it closely folks... a good one.

AN ACTUAL CRAIG'S LIST PERSONALS AD

To the Guy Who Tried to Mug Me in Downtown Savannah night before last.

    Date: 2011-11-27, 1:43 am. E.S.T.

I was the guy wearing the black Burberry jacket that you demanded that I hand over, shortly after you pulled
the knife on me and my girlfriend, threatening our lives. You also asked for my girlfriend's purse and earrings. I can only hope that you somehow come across this rather important message.

First, I'd like to apologize for your embarrassment; I didn't expect you to actually crap in your pants when
I drew my pistol after you took my jacket.. The evening was not that cold, and I was wearing the jacket for a reason.. my girlfriend was happy that I just returned safely from my 2nd tour as a Combat Marine in Afghanistan .. She had just bought me that Kimber
Custom Model 1911 .45 ACP pistol for my birthday, and we had picked up a shoulder holster for it that very evening. Obviously you agree that it is a very intimidating weapon when pointed at your head ... isn't it?!

I know it probably wasn't fun walking back to wherever you'd come from with crap in your pants. I'm sure it
was even worse walking bare-footed since I made you leave your shoes, cell phone, and wallet with me. (That prevented you from calling or running to your buddies to come help mug us again).

After I called your mother or "Momma" as you had her listed in your cell, I explained the entire episode of
what you'd done. Then I went and filled up my gas tank as well as those of four other people in the gas station, -- on your credit card. The guy with the big motor home took 153 gallons and was extremely grateful!

I gave your shoes to a homeless guy outside Vinnie Van Go Go's, along with all the cash in your wallet. [That
    made his day!]

I then threw your wallet into the big pink "pimp mobile" that was parked at the curb ..... after I broke the
windshield and side window and keyed the entire driver's side of the car.

Earlier, I managed to get in two threatening phone calls to the DA's office and one to the FBI, while mentioning
President Obama as my possible target.

The FBI guy seemed really intense and we had a nice long chat (I guess while he traced your number etc.).

;In a way, perhaps I should apologize for not killing you ... but I feel this type of retribution
is a far more appropriate punishment for your threatened crime. I wish you well as you try to sort through some of these rather immediate pressing issues, and can only hope that you have the opportunity to reflect upon, and perhaps reconsider, the career path
you've chosen to pursue in life.. Remember, next time you might not be so lucky. Have a good day!

    Thoughtfully yours, Semper fi,

    Alex

Yes guns have some uses, but not protecting yourself against corrupt governments and then we have the fact that primary school children are unable to have the luxury as they are too young to use a gun.

Actually, that is a scary thought...I often wonder about the same thing here.

HOWEVER...let's be honest, a gun's not going to help you.

I dont wanna get into a gun debate per se however I am a gun owner of multiple guns as I require them for my rural property to eradicate vermin, I have a enough scrub/ bush land that to venture in without a rifle is asking for trouble. I went through many hoops to get the appropriate licences and rifles/ shot guns even to the point of having a psychological test done and have to adhere to strict requirements.

And if one wants to get a gun its as easy as filling up a car with fuel if one wants to not abide by the rules, gun control in Aust has only put strict rules on those who want to abide.

It's really not the same thing as we're discussing here. I don't see how there could be any doubt about a gun or guns being necessary on a farm.

but to have a number of them at home in the city 'for protection' just doesn't make sense.

If everyone has one, then that makes it pretty hard to defend yourself, unless you're quick draw McGraw.
