What are your opinions on these cars? I've heard/read that in stock form their fairly bullet-proof and have been used as daily drivers. True? Not true?

I've driven one (a 83 DP930S- w/k27, adjustable boost and cams) and was blown away by it. I know they can perform, I'm just looking for the day in day out ownership side. I'm on Rennlist but, that's like asking Santa Claus if Christmas is a good time of year.

What are your opinions? For instance, I know the A/C sucks but how bad?

bullet proof! get a usa delivered car as you will at least be able to track the cars history.

i have a few ferraris and a 930 so i can tell you w/o any prejudice, the 930 is an icon and a very rewarding car to drive, to look at and to own. i drove mine this past weekend and what a rush. they are such hot rods!!!!

find a really great one and drive it all you want. the a/c sucks but there are update kits that i'm told can fix it some.

I owned my 930 for almost 10 years and just sold it to my brother-in-law so I'd have room for a another car (Challenge Stradale). One condition of sale was he has to call me first when he sells the car!

Have owned Porsches in the past. They are very robust cars. I also found to be quite simple, less gadgets to break. Look for a later one with the g-50 six speed transmission. Very smooth and stronger than the original 4 speed. When it comes to a Porsche, buy the newest one you can afford or the last of a model. They make a lot of refinements during the course of a model or series run, (One very good side affect of racing the car.) Good luck with your hunt.
    Darrell.

darrell, the 4 sp is actually the strongest box porsche has made. it is able to handle close to 1000 hp!

the g-50 is a 5 sp. your other comments are spot on however.

Buy a stock '89 5sp. Its the last year and most desirable.

I have a 911SC and made the mistake of driving an '86 turbo. Very raw and visceral without all the electronic BS that is on today's cars.

A legendary sportscar that has already started appreciating in value.

I'm looking also. As with all cars, service records are important. Any mods should be modest. The A/c sucks, although there are companies that sell a/c upgrades and I've heard they improve matters but don't expect an icebox.
Maintenance is more expensive with all the turbo plumbing really crowding the engine compartment.

Oil temperature is a concern-if you do a lot of stop and go driving you may want to add a second oil cooler.

The best cars are the '86-89 U.S. market cars; gray market cars if they have a documented history are about 15% less than an equivalent U.S. Market car.

89 is the best year but cost more $$$ because of the 5 spd. tranny.

Funny, but I am partial to '80s Porsches and M5/M6 BMWs.

PM me and I'll give you a list of recommended books.

What color are you looking for?

Best year. Go to sloancars.com and they have a green one which I believe was the last U.S. market turbo ever made with a july 89 build date.

That's the only kind of 930 that Porsche has ever made :)

The 5 speed G50 car is not worth the premium......first gear is an afterthought in real world driving IMHO so avoid the smoke and mirrors $$ wise by guys trying to sell 1989's and buy an 86-88 model year.

My all time favorite car ever !!! Great daily driver too......your main expense will be brake pads/rotors and tires. If properly driven the clutchs are very long life items.....much like anything else I imagine. FWIW...I've owned a couple personally and am a former P-dealer.....and......I had five nice 930's go thru my showroom this year alone.

I had one for 13 years. Put over 40k on it. Other than the syncros getting a little worn, and it eating tires, an absolutely great car.

    RE: to FERRARIPETE,
I stand corrected The g-50 is certainly a 5-speed. Brain thinking one thing, fingers typing another. Have a good day.

    I seem to recall reading that in '86 or '87 Porsche made 7 non-turbo 930s. Really more of a "turbo-look 911" I guess.

There are much more than that floating around. It was popular to have the turbo flares put welded on. I personally, have seen a couple for sale by me.

All 930s are great cars. Doesn't matter if it's a 4 or 5 speed. Buy one that gives you the best vibes. Bottomline...GET IT !

you are correct. the 5 sp in stock trim is probably a better box but w/ mods to the motor, the 4sp is spaced well and to me is a better box. 4th gear is rated at 192 mph if you have the ponies to pull red line. enough room to grow for most!

but find a good one 86-89 and get it!!! send us photos when you do.

mine could be for sale if the money is correct. pm me if you have any ?'s on any of the cars or years. i would be happy to help in your "conversion" process.

    Bump noted.
Somebody must have sold a car...?
Mike, the Porsche I owned was ten years older than what this thread is focused on, but it, too, was bulletproof. They just get better and better.
