Hi I'm mostly a lurker here...but I just spotted what I think is a GTO (silver) while on my way home from running errands. Older gentleman driving, a really clean car, had the hood scoops and was silver in color. Anyone out there know this car? Could it have been a replica?

    thanks.

i suspect it was a replica. a very nice one, alloy body and all. if this is the same car, it was being sold at family classics in san juan capistrano.

i would enjoy that car even if it is an imposter.

there is a real gto that is silver in that area. don't be surprised if you see his red TR(i think pontoon fendered) being exercised. was this near an industrial/business complex area?

    is that s/n 3909 ...

I'm glad he uses it like a car and likes to share with other people...

Seems like a car show out in the street where enthusiasts are clueless about that car's value ...
which is a good thing if you ask me

This is one of the main reasons that I really don't like replicas. Since there are so many, your immediate reaction when you see a car is not one of excitement at seeing the real thing, but a more calm reaction that it is "an interesting car but is most likely a replica". This is not an attempt at a thread hijack or to open up the discussion that has been hashed over every six months ad nauseum, just an observation about how the large number of replicas has diminished the impact of seeing the cars.

The fact that a real 250GTO is driven on the street is fantastic!

Hmm... we sure about this? If I remember right this was probably the best GTO replica out there (having been commissioned to serve as a stand-in for vintage races) but it isn't the real deal.
    =====================

We were offered this car (which was apparently located in California) via a broker 2+ yrs ago.Story alleges that it was made in UK 7-8 yrs ago for a GTO owner who wanted to "park" his real example, but still have all the fun..and the noise!!

Silver makes a real nice change for a GTO - is 4153GT still silver as it was when owned by Nicolaus Springer

I would love to see some of the GTOs returned to some of their liveries from their racing days.
It would be great to see 3729 GT back in white and 3451 in marone with the white roof

    They have indeed.
I particularly like their 250 LM #5907, in the Maranello Concessionaires livery

He was actually turning left on to El Camino, one of the largest and most famous "boulevards" in Northern CA. He was coming out of a residential-only street (Los Altos Ave.)

I just realized it has to be be s/n 3909. After scanning the registry and the owners name...he apparently lives right in the vicinity of where I spotted the car. Wow a real GTO in town! I'd kill to see it up close. And yes, there is also someone nearby who owns a red 250 Spyder (sp?), but at the time I wasn't close enough to determine if it was a replica or not.

if SO ... that car was the world's most expensive once
right after Il Commendatore's death ( the BOOM of the late 80's)

Some Japanese collector paid more than 10 M pounds for it ...
some years later it came to America for a few less millions ...

    but the KOOL thing is:
this guy likes to drive and show it to old cars enthusiasts just for the sake of it...
It doesn't need to scream out how expensive it is to be appreciated...

is it me? or the car is actually being displayed in the street ?

    Let's face it;
out of this forum and out of the Ferrari connousier community
    nobody will notice this car...
and it will pass as just another cute old car

and I think that makes it even more amazing

    crazy spot !

    P.S more pics please

I would want to see the face of the owner when someone asked :

"Is your Ferrari a GTO replica ???"

Congratulations to all here who are OK into turning real Ferraris into replicas...

I think Martin is right. 9 out of ten don't know what it is. Probably 98 out of 100.

People don't know what my Daytona is.

I think it's great to have them out and about.

I bet he gets asked this all the time ... another reason why the hate against replicas must be building.

This must happen to real Cobra owners all the time too ... but it's driving and enjoy YOUR own car that matters not what other people think, but it must be tiring. I'd just agree that it's a replica ... if I was so lucky :D :D

After reading through this thread, I recalled an incident from several years ago, IIRC March of 2004. The Triumph club I belong to went up to a place called the Panel Shop in Stratford CT to see what a couple of British panel beaters were doing on various vintage cars. The place was also affiliated with Automotive Restorations that did the mechanical and interior work. The types of cars they had there ranged form old Jag XK120's to Cuningham's to MGA's a couple of Ferrari's and several Lotus Super 7's. They even had an original 427 Cobra there.

Then I walked into their "showroom" which wasn't very large. It had a desk and three cars crammed in there. One was an early Lotus 7, another a Series I XKE, and then there was this Ferrari GTO. My mouth dropped to the ground. It was silver, just like the one being talked about in this thread. I wasn't really up to snuff on GTO's at the time, (I've learned alot since then) but I knew I had to ask the guy at the desk if it was real. I mean, it was real alright, but whether it was a replica. He told me that the guy who owned it HAS a real one, but that this one is a replica that he uses for vintage racing etc. so he doesn't have to worry about crashing the real thing.

So, out of curiosity, does anyone have any more info on this car that I saw in CT, and the supposedly 'original' GTO that is being 'saved' from destruction by this replica??

    Replica discussed here: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showpost.php?p=137218604&postcount=8
How many silver GTO's are there?, could the real one be the one that is being discussed in this thread?
