I'm thinking of keeping my Scuderia in the UK or somewhere in Europe between April and September of every year (total of 6 months).........what are the rules and regulations and which country would be the best?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I think as long as you have valid european insurance and road tax in the country of origin you are OK.

What if it's just a visiting vehicle (non-resident).......does the same apply?

As to where would be best, I think it rather depends on what you might want to do with it and how often. The UK is actually probably best in terms of the number of events, what with the things the Owners' Club does; various track days; Goodwood; Auto Italia and so on. However, for actually driving the car, you're probably better off in Continental Europe, maybe somewhere like the South of France.

Yes, I think so. There are large numbers of 'foreign' (especially Arab - i.e. from the Middle East) cars in London during the Summer months, so it is far from out of the ordinary. They drive around on Dubai (or wherever) plates, quite happily.

Thanks Jonathan for the suggestions.......yeah, I would like to take her for some drives in Europe, attend some events. Don't know what to do though with regards to registration or insurance. The car will need something such as a temporary registration or a visiting permit, in order not to pay duties or sales tax on the car.

Generally the rules are set around 6 months ie under that and you can use the car on your current plates, if longer you might have to register it in the Country it stays in however who's going to know?!, the more limiting factor is normally some insurance companies will set a max overseas limit of 3 months or similar, worth checking

Thanks Mark.......6 months suits me fine. Is that the rule in the UK? I will never leave the car abroad more than 6 months. Say for instance I will be leaving the Scud in the UK, would you happen to know if I'll need to insure it with a company in the UK or will my local insurance policy suffice?

Best to check with your insurance company on a Scud (Or any High value car) there might be some restictions a tracker would be a bloody good idea I think so at least you can see how fast your very good FCHAT friends are driving YOUR car.

The UK would be a great idea during the summer months. Apart from the advantages of good events etc., you seem to be fluent in english which would be a great advantage in foreign motoring.

However, There are beautiful places and driving roads in France, and easy access to Germany for autobahns, Italy too if you want a heritage drive. Having said that, these trips can be done from the UK..

I used to live in Dubai until the year 2000, when we moved back here (home) we brought two cars with us and had them on UAE plates for about 6 months. Obviously as British citizens we re-registered them but as far as i can remember we were ok with it.

Sorry i cant be of more detailed help..Good Luck!!

P.S. I will keep it warm for you while you are away :D
    Regards

Thanks Jack...........I will want to take her for drives in Europe, but I will do that out of the UK like you mentioned. The UK, for me is the most convenient place to leave my car for those 6 months.
I want to do exactly what you did with your two cars from the UAE.....leave it unregistered in the UK for a period of 6 months and then re-export the car back to Egypt. Once I know exactly what I need to do to leave it in the UK for those 6 months, I'll start looking for a home for the car ;).

You wont have any problems with a car here on Egyptian plates - Egyptian plates + driving license = no speed limit and no camera problem
If you visit the garage below the London Jumeirah hotel you will see loads of Dubai and Abu Dhabi cars which are permanently based in London

I understand that a lot of these cars aren’t actually insured

Clearly that is not a good situation so I would check that your local insurer is willing to cover the car in Europe

Finding a London garage where you keep the car "plug-in" might be harder and not cheap

    Hi Tarek

A quick Google search confirms it is 6 months, but as others have said check with your insurers, assuming they cover overseas use there is no requirement for UK specific insurance

Excellent......that settles it then. Thanks Mark, I really appreciate your help. Now I need to start looking for a home for the car. Maybe someone with a big enough garage will be willing to take her in ;).

If it is for you to drive often, leave it at a dealership when you are outside of the country, otherwise you are welcome to use one of my garages, I have 7, all over west london (near Heathrow), all secure. Otherwise PM me and I can see about getting you time at a dealership. Low charge of course.

    Best
