Legislature's mistake jeopardizes license plate law

This affects the front license plate:

Unfortunately, because the legislature forgot to include a $200 fine for this offense in the new statute that takes effect 1-1-2012, it may have left the door open for $500 fine.

Check out this Attorney General request for an opinion for the whole story: RQ-1014-GA

I dont see any refernece to the $500 fine. I have gotten 1 in Fort Worth and it was $80 and one in Plano and it was $120. So it sounds like the cities have some leway in the actual price. I guess this is saying the maximum allowed currently is $200?

Now is this saying that there is no law which says that there is a fine attached to the law? So if you get a ticket for no license plate, go in and plea guilty, all they can do is say "ok" and maybe charge you an administration fee for the "paperwork"?

I paid $10 for no front plate on my Scuderia from a pissed off officer when I left Coffee and Cars few months back. You have to show court proof that the plate is now there and $10 administrative fee.

I got a ticket for no front plate in 1970. A warning, no fine.
Another one in 1991. No fine, just a warning.

Then again in 2000. No fine.
Two days later (still in 2000), two tickets in one day, but still no fine.

None since then and the dealer doesn't even drill holes for the front bracket here. I haven't had a front plate since 1983 on any of my cars.
I'll take the risk even if I have to pay a fine since the enforcement is so infrequent.

Does having antique registration add use restrictions to your insurance?

If a legislative fix is required, the next session doesn't begin until January 2013, though Gov. Rick Perry could call a special session if a correction is needed badly enough.

Despite his warnings to Abbott, however, Pickett downplayed potential problems in an interview Tuesday.

Driving without two license plates will remain illegal, he said, making it a poor strategy for anyone hoping to avoid detection while committing a crime.

"It doesn't matter if there's a fine or not, it's still illegal, and you'll still be pulled over," Pickett said. "If there are other issues going on, why would you want to bring attention to yourself?"

I drove all over the State last weekend the highways are HOT and getting HOTTER.

    Jus' sayin.

Watch your speed, watch your stickers or you'll be having a chat at the shoulder of the road. They are not really looking for the revenue they are looking for "other criminal activity"...

Willie Nelson should get a limo....
