I would like to repaint the cam covers on my 512 TR , how difficult is it to remove covers with the engine in the car ?

    not recommended.

at the front, the cover compreses the o-rings that go around the outside of the cam's end plate. The end plate also holds the oil wiper seal on its inner surface. When you pull the cover, the o-ring may be destroyed. To replace the o-ring you'll wind up pulling the engine or replacing only the top half & slopping a bunch of silicon on it in hopes for a seal.

The o-ring to head interface usually has a dab of silicone added for good measure. I used hylomar around the outer edge of the o-ring & a dab of black silicone in the corners. I could never get this kind of precision with the engine in the car.

The interface between O-ring, paper gasket, hylomar, silicon, end plate, cam cover and head is an area which requires diligence for a tight seal.

it 'could' be done.... but don't do it.

He's right. You might get it back together okay but there's a fighting chance you'll end up with some leaks.

Also, instead of painting them, have them powdercoated instead.
