Anyone see Mythbusters on Wednesday? They crushed a Bertone X1/9 between two semi-trucks. Too bad, the body was in great shape and the interior didn't look too bad. The owner said that the engine was gone and it had been sitting in his driveway for a long time, so he let Mythbusters have it for their experiment.

Whether or not a compact car would be so crushed between two semi trucks that you could not find the car in the rubble. They could find the car. Myth Busted.

BTW, X1/9's are known to be very safe and sturdy for their size.

Wasnt the X1/9 one of a couple of cars that passed a US crash test that was so stringent that the US backed off requiring the test because the rest of the market couldn't pass?

that and a Volvo were the only ones that passed a 40mph frontal impact with the cabin intact i think. also, i believe there was an issue in the early 70's where convertibles were basically going to be outlawed in the US by nutty standards, and the X was purportedly designed to withstand an 80mph rollover... sorry can't remember the full story, i'll look it up later.

OK, I found this statement on an X1/9 site:

    http://www.sportsvogn.no/x19reg/story.html

"The X1/9 is extreme stiff to be a open top car. The background for this stiffness is a separate story. At the late sixties the the americans was planning new safety regulations in the USA. One goal was new crash tests that should be the same for all cars, even the open top cars. So Bertone made the car stiff as hell with a roll over cage. The result was very good. Together with Volvo the little Fiat was the only one to make it through the new test like frontal crash from 70 km/h and roll over from 120 km/h without much less room in the cabin. Then the americans discovered that non of thir own USA-cars did it through the tests, so they lowered the levels of these tests."

Those rules effected more than U.S. cars. At the time the cars were being designed it looked like there was no way a convertible could pass the tests.I think that explains why the Jaguar XJ-S and the Triumph TR-8 were hardtops when they first appeared.
