is it ok to run regular unleaded with some kind of octane boost from Autozone?

I need to find some also.
Have about 10 gals in the car but this about what I will need to start it up and get the engine warm. After that i'm on fumes.

Found some yesterday at the corner of Clanton and Barringer (exit 7, I-77).

It was a Godsend after scouring stations throughout the Fort Mill/South Charlotte area to no avail.

Just stopped by there... no luck... they are all out of everything, as is the station across the street.

Ah - sorry to hear that. Guess I got lucky yesterday. My daily driver now is a Honda S2000, which requires 93. How ironic it will be if the fuel shortage requires me to drive our 87 octane gulping SUV.

BC, depends on the car, but the answer is probably yes. If you car is newer and fully computer controlled with anti-knock sensors, you can run the 87 octane for a short while with no harm to the engine. It's the older more manual high compression engines that you shouldn't run with lower octane as they have no way to adjust the timing for the fuel. add the octane boost and you should be fine...maybe add an additional bottle for good measure ;)

I recently read a study that said you can run 87 all the time with really no affect on the engine of newer, anti-knock sensor cars. The study was joint with MB, BMW and Porsche, all said it was OK. I wouldn't do it forever, but for a short issue like we have now, I'm ok in the 993.

btw, I found 89 at the Raceway on the corner of I85 and Brookshire. Kinda annoys me because all 89 is, is a mix from the 93 tank and the 87 tank. They only recieve 2 grades, and mix them for mid grade, meaning they HAVE 93, they just don't want to sell it straight up.

Am I missing something? Why is Premium unavailable? I haven't been to fill up in about 2 weeks (MINI :) ), but the car does indeed need Premium.

    then you're in trouble...
I tried 15 stations today. only 2 had gas with really long lines. and none had premium. By tomorrow i suspect no gas anywhere...

Now I know how my parents felt in the 70's.

    This is really stupid....

pipeline to all those tanks in Greensboro comes from the Gulf, thank Ike, which shut down all those refineries.

I just bought a couple bottles of octane booster from autozone (1 bottle treats 25 gallons) and I filled up with 87.

    interesting read:

    http://www.usatoday.com/money/autos/2003-07-30-premiumgas_x.htm

    from the article:

"...Burning regular when the owner's manual specifies premium won't void the warranty, nor damage the engine, even the most finicky automakers say. "You're giving up perhaps just a little bit of performance that a customer wouldn't really even notice, it's so slight," says Furey.

Automakers say they don't test premium engines on regular to check the difference, but some auto engineers estimate that power declines roughly 5%.

"We can't guarantee the vehicle will perform as specified if other than premium fuel is used," says Mercedes-Benz spokeswoman Michelle Murad. All U.S. Mercedes engines specify premium.

All Porsche engines are designed for premium, too, but it's not available everywhere. "Our cars must be able to drive all over the world, and so we are able to run on regular," says Jakob Neusser, director of powertrain development at Porsche's research and development center in Weissach, Germany. "You don't have to feel that a mechanical problem or anything else will happen" using regular gas, even in the highest-performance, regular-production Porsches...."

How about ANY gas in the charlotte area? This is crazy!

I live in the Matthews area and there is no gas to be found - except 2 places (Walmart and Shell on the corner of 51 and Monroe) - and both of those places have a 2 hour wait (they are probably out by now).

The delivery drivers at our pizza stores are running out of gas and can't find anywhere to fill up. We had a real crisis tonight, deliveries coming to a near halt while drivers tried to find gas, and the ones that had gas could not get around easily because of people blocking the roads going into gas stations that had gas.

Someone thats works at the Exxon in Windsor Square on Independence in Matthews said they probably won't get gas for another 7-10 days. Hard to believe, but I don't know why she would say that if it wasn't true.

At first i thought you where talking about Manhattan NY running out of gas. I thought to myself, crap (that's where I gotta go on Monday). In East Tn they have most of the stores back up and running and have gas. Prices are around 3.84-3.89 a gallon for Reg. I went to Knoxville TN Monday night and gas was only 3.39 - 3.49 a gallon for Regular. Just got into Greensboro NC today and the gas is around 3.92. The TA Travel Centers in Whitsett NC is at 3.63 a gallon and I can find out if they have Supreme by tommorrow. I'd call around and ask before driving around and wasting gas.
The Citgo near Concord near the Big mall I remember having Supreme about 6 days ago but they ran out in less than 6 hours. Dunno if they have any Supreme anymore.

Yep, this is all completely nuts. We're going to start seeing quite a few standed cars on the side of the road. I saw a lady yesterday who ran out while waiting in a long line for gas. They were pushing her car into the station.

Funny thing, my parents have a huge storage tank with gas at their farm in SC; however, my round trip would be about 280 miles. Oh well!

It's even worse today. I'd estimate there are 300+ cars in line at the Wal-Mart off Sardis Road North. The police even have their crowd control station set up in the parking lot - one of those mobile booths that go up about 30 feet on a scissor lift.

The Sams Mart station on the corner of 51 and Monroe Rd has a line that goes all the way past the Matthews post office. Police are all around there as well.

Those are the only 2 places with gas anywhere around here that I know of.

Drove by probably 15-20 stations in a very indirect way home... 1 with gas on south blvd... lines were into the intersection, i skipped it. Im running a quarter tank and Im thinking i may be heading to South Carolina to get some if I cannot find any soon... is it any better there? this is so stupid, burning gas to get more gas. my friends in DC seem to have plenty of gas...

You won't find it in Fort Mill/Rock Hill. The Observer reports that shipments will arrive in Spartanburg and Asheville tomorrow, with a larger shipment in Charlotte on Saturday.

Now THERE's and idea.... Hey Kevin. How about a Midnight Gas Run after the Fantail reception on Friday Night? Imagine a couple dozen Ferrari's and other sports cars pulling into gas stations at 1am?
