According to Matthias Urban, who runs the Dino Directory, non-US market cars had no external mirrors, and no factory options for it either. That makes any outside mirror a dealer or owner installed option on the non-US cars.

Interesting...

HEY TOM SHAUGHNESSY, what's the rules on concours for this? If the non-US car has an outside mirror, it's not factory no matter what. That means it was installed as a safety feature. What's that do on the scorer's sheet?

very interesting...
I know only pictures from the factory or from fares (Ferrari year book 1968-70) without side mirrors. Maybe at a later stage of production side mirrors have been fitted?! Or just for cars directy picked up at the factory by the client. Or dealer ordered the side mirrors. Different countries in Europe had different side mirror fitted.
;-)

Regards Matthias

The Real-Deal/Variation on a Theme

Hey Phil,
Me thinks you are holding a Talbot Berlin 300 Senior. If yours has four inch diameter glass, that's it. If three-point-five, it's a Junior. The Moss offering is likely a nice repro of the Junior, sans the logo.
Should you decide to replace that gem with the real-deal, check out aardvark international. I just spoke to them; they're still around & they stock Talbot, plus Fiamm, Vitaloni and Cibie products.

'trust this helps.
Cheers,

Sebrings?

Dan,
Are those Vitaloni Sebrings on your fabulous car? That has to be a totally unique arrangement, too! The whole thing works with the Verde Germoglio. 'love it!

Phil- I have a brand new one from Superformance. It is chrome and is round...it is what is on my '74. I bought it for my '71 coupe which will not see the road for eons. It is yours...no charge. We have our 10th annual New Canaan Motorsports show 10/18 and I hope you can bring the Dino up for it. I can mail this to you or on 9/21 I have a dinner in nyc and can meet up with you and give it to you then. Please let me know what works...TC

Thanks for the compliment, and yes, Coop, those are indeed Sebrings. As I alluded to previously, the car was delivered in the UK with no outside mirrors. My dad and I came up with that arrangement (somewhat racing car inspired) as the most functional. (A left side mirror mounted on the door was virtually useless.) As it turns out, the assymetry works well for RHD in a LHD world, where the car now resides. With the passage of time, the mirrors deteriorated and were replaced about 3 years ago with new Sebrings (the ones in the photo), which are a somewhat larger than the originals. The left side mirror now has a convex lens.

Sorry for the tardy response. I spent the weekend competing with our local car club in the 24 Hours of Lemons here in SC. (Our '74 Alfa Spider's cooling fan disintegrated and sliced through the radiator about 1 1/2 hours from the end.)

'hadn't thought about the LHD/RHD dynamics. Hmmm. I can relate, as our '64 Cooper S is a right-hooker. Granted, the vis in our Mini is massively better than that of your GTS (or our GT, for that matter), but I can certainly appreciate the avantage of your arrangement.

Now..., we can totally hijack Phil's thread, or segue to a new one. Whatever. Just tell us about your adventure at '24 Heures du Mons, Circuit Parc de la Caroline Motorsport!'

Tardiness excused,
Coop

mirror

The mirror's did not come with the car, they are added aftermarket, some at the dealers.
I have seen old photos with both the cone and flat type, but it seems that the flat mirror was by far the most popular.
i keep mine stock, no mirror! but then again it does not go out much, i think one really should have a mirror if u use the car.

Because I am the type of guy to p*ss people off by asking why and exploring the history.....

I already posted of legit factory photo's of Dino's at the factory with mirrors attached (courtesy of an unknown copyright on photo's posted on f-chat).....

Here are a couple of photo's of the "box that contained owners items", listed are "2 rear reflecting mirrors"....This box came from Ferrari Spa.

My 72 Dino coupe has documentation of items being held in "The box"....

I am not saying all cars had mirrors, nor that all usa spec cars had mirrors installed by the dealer or the factory....

What I am saying is that there is no ABSOLUTE certainty about the why/reason/how/when/where...

it looks to me, that late Dinos (1973/74) have been fitted with rear mirrors, but all sort of different types....

Door Panels...

If you're taking the door panel off, be sue you know the procedure. The first time I did mine, it wasn't much fun... that screw hidden behind the door handle had me stumped for a while!!

Many years ago, a friend was reparing the passenger window of his many-owner Datsun Z... he opened up the door and found a couple of ounces of a cerain white powder in there, nicely wrapped. He became quite enervated and chatty for the next few months. Maybe you'll find Jimmy Hoffa in yours!

You could buy one of these mirrors from Orlando at La Scuderia Rossa for $379.00 ($288.00 plus $91.00 s&h)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=220478914969

or from Centerline Alfa at $79.50 on page 37.
http://www.centerlinealfa.com/products/
BTW, I hate their new web catalog but for $299.50 I guess I can put up with it.
It almost looks like they are competing with Wurth for the poorest design in websites that are not fully integrated in online purchasing - a tough battle indeed!

Good Stuff

Scott,
Have you seen one of Centerline's offerings--up close & personal? They look good in the catalog. It's nice to know that there's a supplier right here in the USofA. And, the price is right!

I bought two 'proper-type' mirrors several years ago from someone in Germany; they were a bit more money than those from Centerline. As anxious as I was to install them, I've yet to do so! Actually, I had hoped to just replace the Californians, using the same holes in the doors. But it wasn't that easy. The pax side Vitaloni is skewed at quite an angle in order to see out of it. The holes in the door skin are also skewed such that the base of the 'original-type' mirror won't cover one of the holes, and a new one must be drilled, too! No thanks. I'm not ready to paint the car, or any portion of it, right now.

Oh well, thanks for the find!
Coop
