The GTO got a transaxle verses the SWBs standard trans. It had 5-speeds... more power, Completely different body, Aluminum construction (SWB road cars are steel, comp cars are aluminum) The 288 GTO had a different wheelbase. Just about every body panel was different. even the wing mirriors were different. The engine was mounted longitudinally vs transversely... turbos... vs natural aspiration... different wheel base... different materials for construction |

Justin- The 250 GTO did not have a transaxle or IRS. The chassis is very similar to the SWB. There were cheater coil springs added, but overall very similar with a live rear axle. The 5 speed was new for GTs, and the car used a 250 TR engine. The first GT (?) with a transaxle and IRS was the 250 LM, followed by the 275 GTB/S.

I just got off the phone with my dealer. He had a meeting with F people all day yesterday and took the opportunity to bring up the subject of the 599 "GTO" with them. The only news beside what I have already posted here is that the first cars will be built in July -10.

Delivery should begin in earnest by fall 10...I'm thinking about a trip to the factory so late summer/early fall would be great!

It has not been decided yet. Most likely Geneva in March, but it sounds like clients with orders will be invited to the factory for a private viewing before then

The only reason the homologation is needed is because the name GTO -Gran Turismo Omologato- implies homologation, not because homologation would make the car better. After all the 288 was not a successful race car like the 250. Having said that, in my view F will find it impossible to sell the 600 cars without the GTO name at 360k+ EUR inc taxes. The price is too high for a "Scuderia" version of the 599. I am worried about one thing though: Ferrari did not use the usual "selection" process for the allocation and took deposits from long standing Ferrari clients and enthusiasts rather than the usual "celebrities"... This in my mind means the car will rank below their usual top end models (288, F40, F50, Enzo)... Also there is an Enzo replacement coming in 2012 Fingers crossed... |

I got my deposit in today on the GTO. Third on the list. Its going to be a long year. Even with my deposit Ferrari will make the ultimate decision as to which clients they deem worthy, not their dealers. Nothing is guaranteed until the fat lady sings.

Very true... I apologize for my bad English, I never meant to say the 288 was a poor racecar, it just never got the chance to race. Actually I was lucky enough to own a Porsche 959 for a year (1998) and 8,000km and I must say that while the 959 feels relatively ordinary today, the 288 is still very very special to drive. Only a Ferrari can have this feeling 25 years on! I wish I'd bought one while they were still reasonable money...

Does anyone know if the 599GTO will be produced in RHD as well? Ferrari has a habit of shafting their customers who live in strictly RHD countries

Am I remembering incorrectly, but was not the 288 GTO originally intended to be a Group B Rally car before the rules were changed? Sort of a follow-on to the successful Lancia rally cars of the 70s and early 80s. Rules changes wiped out any possibility of competing.
