Hopefully this is not a repost. Very cool comparison of both types of cars from the same camera superimposed on one another. F1 is incredibly faster if the video is legit.

    Interesting - Thanks for posting.

I'd say it's legit - If you've ever watched Supercup (or whatever - F3 etc) after F1 they seem about as quick as a diesel powered wheelbarrow..... [With thanks to Clarkson for the quote]

During my abortive attempt at driving an F1 car there, they told us we had to brake going down the hill  I didn't in the F3 training car and they were *really* pissed - "You're not getting in the F1 unless you slow down!"......

    Cheers,
    Ian

What strikes me is how much straighter the corner is for F1 cars. The line they take is fundamentally different

That was the other thing I was going to say :)

You'd have thought "straighter the better" and if they can, I can - Straights are always easier than corners. Obviously not. Maybe Pro Coach will have a comment?

    Cheers,
    Ian

Straighter is better but in the real world that's mitigated by power and grip levels.

    Yes sir.

I've mentioned it before, but search isn't being my friend right now. Somehow (!) I received an email from "Adrenaline Sports" in the UK saying (something like) "this is gonna be the last chance idiots like you get to play with an F1 car at Spa." [This is late '00 for a trip in March '01 btw - I just found the pix.]

The price (for the trip + ~20laps in an F3 + 4 in the F1) was high, but I wanted to try it, and at Spa!.... Cutting a long story short(er), by the time it was my turn, one car was completely dead and the only one left (a Larrousse) had a sketchy gearbox - I was sent out and limped around going between 2nd and 3rd and N - *Very* disappointed would be an understatement - They refunded and gave me a nice price on a subsequent opportunity - "Unfortunately", this time at Lucy Lervis (an FIA test track) near Magny Cours.

It was still the experience of a lifetime :) [Particularly when I lapped the guy in Damon Hills Arrows - Twice - In the space of ~6 laps!]

And I did get to do ~25laps of Spa in an F3 car - The place is *awesome* :)

    Cheers,
    Ian

Indeed. But why can't the tintops get themselves straight & pointed in the same direction, apply power and use whatever grip they have? - Much easier to control in a straight line.

I'm not arguing btw, I just don't get it!

OK, the F1 car's generating monster downforce, but again, "so what"? Seems to me it's pure power that's their big advantage here. And they go straight.... ;)

    Cheers,
    Ian
PS - I think I've got it - It's not quite a straight, and the tintops do 3 (!) big-ol'-Cadillac style rolls on their way thru.... They can't help it.... (?) Just an idea....

Could have more to do with the F1 cars having a literal surplus of power and grip than the road based cars having a lack. The laws of physics apply to mere mortals not to Superman ;)

That just reminded me - I believe the teams get all the video feeds from everyone's onboards - They can do the same overlays themselves - IIRC, we saw it a few times last season for brief segments (a corner or two?) - Matchett got a woody!....

Hopefully, with HD it becomes "easier" for 'em to feed it out to us! :)

    Cheers,
    Ian

This camera angle just shows how scary F1 really is...

The superimposition of the two videos isn't perfect, which makes it look like the F1 cars are going straighter than they are, relative to the trackday cars.

As for the speed of the F1 cars, I was sitting at the stands at the end of that piece of road last year @ Spa, and that is definitely representative of F1 car speed. They are phenomenal.

the camera positions aren't exactly the same.... the angle is different so the line will appear to be different. Still gives a good idea on the difference in speed though
