Marco Andretti and F1

F1 chiefs 'watching' teenage Andretti

His phone has run off the hook

A link between Marco Andretti and F1 may be more than idle chatter, with his Grandad hinting at the interest of Grand Prix bosses.

19-year-old Andretti, whose father Michael and grandfather Mario both raced in motor sport's highest category, narrowly missed victory at his first Indy 500 last Sunday.

Mario Andretti, 66 - who in 1978 won F1's drivers' championship - told La Gazzetta dello Sport this week: ''I would like (Marco) to come to F1 with Ferrari.''

But he has now also told US publication Sun-Sentinel that, due to interest from across the pond, his phone has run off the hook since the famous race.

Andretti added: ''They're watching.''

Sun-Sentinel speculated that, at 5 foot 6, Marco is also the perfect size for F1.

Father Michael's Grand Prix assault alongside Ayrton Senna in 1993 famously failed, but a couple of years later he helped Jacques Villeneuve make the leap from America to F1.

He said: ''I told (Jacques) things like, 'Make sure you get 3000 miles of testing before that first race'.

''I would do the same for Marco.''

Kinda what we were talking about in another thread but a real article this time. I wonder if a test is in the works...

Yeah, they liked Michael too, when he was 'hot'.

Michael will have other advice for Marco, too. Things like 'if you get married, make certain you keep your testicles intact'.

That's a repost, scroll down a few posts. Here's a link to the Sun-Sentinel article refered to by various F1 sites that I posted in that thread... http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/s...3624057.column

It's no surprise that there's interest in Marco. He has a thoroughbred name, is mature beyond his years and has a real racer's mentality. Plus, he's not married to a leopard print wearing, trailer-trash bimbo, which helps. I'm sure he'll get some tests at least. And after his drive at Watkins Glen, people should be even more impressed.

A lot has to do with the marketable name. Why would they show interest in him and not Bourdais?

For the USA Andretti is about as marketable as it gets...

and marco is the real deal. i loved the interview after the 500...they were asking him a few questions and he was pretty calm and composed. then they said well at least he could be very proud to have come in second - his answer: second is nothing. (or something to that effect) that is classic american winner-take-all attitude. i loved it !

I think Marco is more like his grandfather than Michael is, and better suited to F1.

And he should probably follow the same path as Mario: spend a few years in IRL, win some races, perhaps Indy, perhaps the championship. Then when he is 24 or so, off to Europe, full time. Get to F1, race there for about 10-15 years, then come back to IRL (or its equivalent). As Mario (as well as Emmo and Nigel) proved, it is easy to go from F1 back to Indycars once you have the experience.

It's impossible not to be impressed by this kid, based on his performances to date. Let's see how he does the rest of the season. Mario is still enormously popular and respected in Europe. He could open a lot of doors for Marco. Dad should stay home and run the IRL team.

Hilarious! The kid seems to be the real deal and you could see it in him even last year in the Series Feeder for the IRL. The guy has definate talent, lets see what he does for the rest of the year.
