Niki Lauda Hat Ein Ohr, Ein Ohr, Ein Ohr
One of my favorites, Niki Lauda, was not only a great driver, he epitomized bravery and brains on the track. Despite his disfiguring accident, he has maintained a vibrant sense of humor, making fun of himself on many occasions.
He often jokes that he still goes to that part of the track of his accident and looks for his ear. At Monza Sunday, Lauda was doing broadcasts for RTL, and as he walked around, to Lauda's amusement the crowd started chanting Niki Lauda Hat Ein Ohr: "Niki Lauda Has One Ear". Dark humor, to say the least, but it appears that Lauda enjoys the attention. He is still a prominent figure in F1, and a former Ferrari driver. |

Remember Nuerburgring this summer when Bernie and Lauda visited the crash site and Bernie pulls out a pig's ear and shouts "I just found your ear!".
![]() Ever heard the German punk band "Die Aerzte"? They have a song titled "Lieber Michael Schumacher gib Gas." It's pretty funny. |

Lauda was my childhood hero... I remember seeing him at Watkins Glen in 74 - he was almost a nobody... Reggazoni was the big guy on campus, but my dad said "that kid Lauda is gonna be great next year" and he was right...
Back in the 70's you only got to see F-1 in the USA 2 maybe 3 times each year... Monaco, Long Beach and Watkins Glenn.. we used to go to the Glenn each year, so I remember seeing all the great ones there.... we had a standing reservation at the Glenn Motor Court restaurant for each Friday Night before pratice... one year we ate next to - Literally 8 - 9 inches away from Colin Chapman & Emmerson Fittipaldi... I think that was 73.... in 75 Lauda was at a large round table in the corner whith Carlos Pace, Reggazoni, Brambillia,& I think Montezemolo... We got everybodys autograph as they left their table.... except Lauda.... he was kinda arrogant pretended not to see me..... which was kinda of hard since I was right in front of him... so move on to the next year 76 - after the accident, and we saw him again this time he had his hat pulled down over his face, sitting at a table next to the door... with some guy - later found out it was Ermano Coughi.... so as I went in I asked him to sign my program, which he did... seemed almost glad to... he even pulled my arm in so a waiter could pass by... but his face was so pink and puffy.... he had a very strange look on his face like he was really sad... but then my mom figured it out... he did not have any eye brows, or eyelashes... so he looked kinda like a lonely orphan... needless to say I was crushed when he lost the championship to Hunt... and then next year 77 I was curshed again when he left Ferrari... but I always liked him and was thrilled when he was WC in 84... I saw him again at detroit in both 84 & 85, but by then he was really arrogant... he just pushed you out of the way or did not even look at you... but he is still one of my top favorite personalities of all time!... Schumacher I dont think even approaches a Lauda type personallity... he has too many handlers ... wow did I go on or what! |

Actually I enjoyed reading that. Lauda is evidently a very driven kind of person...as is Schumacher. No pun intended. I admire Lauda because it takes guts to show up in public with only one ear and not give a damn. |
