Button in 2007

He drove from 14th to 3rd yesterday, being defeated only by drivers on the top two teams. Brazil also marked the 7th race in a row in which he scored points. If Honda continues on their end with pace and reliability, and he continues to improve as a driver, what are his chances next year with MS gone, Alonso on a struggling team, and Ferrari dealing with a new driver (who will not get much pre-season track time) and the potential loss of Ross Brawn?

I think Button will be good for third place in the championship next year behind Alonso and Kimi (in no particular order).

I rate him a lot higher than I do either GF or Massa.

He does seem a bit more confident since he won his first grand prix, doesn't he? I've seen him make some ballsy passes in the last few races, which he never seemed to do before. Maybe 2007 will be his year as a contender.

So much competition likely in 2007. Button will win one or two races, and maybe 4th or 3rd in points. At this point, if the McLaren does not improve, Button should finish ahead of either McLaren.

If Honda give him the car, he can easily be a WDC. Alonso and Schumacher weren't winning championships when they had the 4th fastest car on the grid.

jenson will do good next year at least 4 in DC, but where is Rubens, last time I checked he hasn't done anything at Honda, not one podium, almost half the points of Jenson. I thought Yuji Ide didn't live up to expectations.

I think Kimi, Fernando, and Felipe will place higher than him in the points. Button 4th.

Button has clearly put Rubens in his place this year. I expected Rubens to struggle in the first few races as he didnt get too much experience with the car - he was prevented from driving the car till the beginning of this year due to contractual reasons. I thought that Rubens would pick up the pace later on and dominate Button towards the end of the year.

Well that didn't happen - Button has outqualified and outraced Rubens pretty much all year round.

Thus he is a great driver. However, I think he doesnt have the 2% extra that Michael, Kimi and Fred have to make a bad/average car shine. Given a car advantage for sure Button can fight for a wins. But a championship - I am not sure he has what it takes.

I like Button and think he will also finish 3rd behind either Alonso and Kimi. However, after watching Massa for the second half of the year, I think he might be a surprise, kinda like Nigel Mansell when he started finally winning. I am not counting him out.

The problem with Button is he lacks a bit of Tiger, kinda reminds me of Patrick Tambay and Thierry Boutsen. Great guys, good drivers, but not real racers.

I think Kimi and Massa will be the top. Not blind optimism, just that Renault will have only GF as an experienced driver, not very strong mentally imo. McLaren seem to be in crisis mode and Alonso showed me this year that he also is not mentally strong (see "Everyone's out to get me!").

Massa will be the only top driver returning to his team, and though Ferrari are/maybe losing many personal, hopefully those coming up have learned something the past few years.

All this said, I would say Ferrari 1-2 (not sure what order, but Kimi is bloody fast) with Jenson 3rd.

Alonso is not mentally strong, yet won the championship? I guess I've heard stranger things.

I have a high regard for Button’s driving; he has shown he can be fast with very few errors. Whether he has the ultimate pace of Kimi or Fernando and, as mentioned, the tiger instinct, is up for debate though. Ultimately I think it’s up to Honda to provide the car for him to challenge.

What I meant was, take a look at how he started to act when things didn't go his way. First it was a Ferrari conspiracy, then his team was out to get him...........He's bloody quick and acts fine as long as his car is performing well, but if things start to go bust, I could see him getting quite upset.

I agree with that! I don't think that he will ever be consistent enough to be a WC, but can have good performances on good days.

Problem with Button -very much hyped by the British media as a future WC -is that if anything goes slightly wrong in practice or qualif, he straightaway loses heart and publicly write off the weekend: "We will be lucky if we get in the points", or"The car doesn't perform well enough". Always excuses, and not a very positive attitude. Does he expect the car to be perfect all the time? Men like MS or KR don't slate their car/team and go around the problems.

Alonso is not mentally strong? You wouldn't know it by his driving, he is impervious to pressure from behind and drives with a maturity well beyond his years.

Who cares if he mouths off in an interview, that says nothing whatsoever about his driving abilities.
