Ignoring the fact that the speeding thread is only a few below this one...anyone know of a good one?

Which County you going to? Give me a brief summary of the event...you may not need one. Basically how it works is if you you get any kind of goofball with a law degree to show up on time for court you'll get a $50-$100 fine and supervision. If your situation is esculated, as in you are already on supervision or are trying to avoid a suspension due to prior citations, than it is best to find a lawyer whom is familiar to the specific court you are going to. If you are unsure, you best bet is to take in a day of traffic court and see which defenders present look like they have practiced there before and hire one of them. If you are talking DUI or something serious, like anything you get what you pay for. As far as first time speeding\traffic offenses, you really don't need a lawyer. I'd just dress well, be courteous and request supervision.

I have a good one ,got me out of many hopeless jams over the last 20 years (incl 140mph on Rt41).
He's pricey though..

Thanks guys for the responses! It's just a speeding ticket, but I had received a previous one for 15-25 over a few months ago and another a few months before that (bad string of luck..) and want to avoid any type of suspension. It's in Cook County at the Skokie Courthouse. I actually found someone who was a former prosecutor there which should be a big help. If something falls through I'll PM you guys.

Ok, no problem. It sounds like you defintely should get representation at the very least. It also sounds like you got the right guyin mind...former pros tend to know alot of people and can get special consideration. Good luck!

Two issues;

One; I have the BEST. This guy is a name you would all (OK, almost all) recognize and I don't care if you punched the cop, you'll walk. He's very very "heavy" if you know the meaning of the word in Chicago. So PM me if you want to walk. No supervision, no nothing.

In 2001 ,in '01 CL55,North of Deerpath,pulled over just before Knauz.(traffic was light Sunday morning)

Townshend and everyone else,

I'm sure your attorney will know this when you go to Court, but the statute was amended as of January 1, 2006 regarding the issuance of Court supervision. Under the amendment, you are only allowed TWO supervisions within a one year period. If you received supervision on the two tickets you mentioned, you are not eligible for supervision on your current violation.
Several of my clients have run into this problem within the last 30-45 days because we are obviously coming up on the end of the year.

The Assistant States Attorney in the Courtroom your case is assigned to will more than likely have either your driving abstract from the Secretary of State, or a stapled spreadsheet which contains the driving records of everyone's case that is on the Court call for that day. If the ASA misses your prior(s) for whatever reason, and offers the supervision on your third, take it and run. If they catch it, have your attorney continue your case to a date subsequent to one year from the termination date of your first supervision. That way, you become eligible again.

You can also set the case for trial and hope the officer fails to appear. Without him/her, the State cannot proceed as any evidence against you, i.e. the uniform traffic citation, is inadmissible hearsay.

Also, if you are going to use an attorney, always use someone who practices primarily in the County where you picked up the violation. You do not want someone who is unknown to the prosecutors and the Judge going in for you. It's worth the cost of a local attorney to avoid having the conviction on your driving abstract.

Thanks for the information! I actually just paid my previous two tickets and plead guilty, both went on my record. Last time I received supervision was August 05, so I should be good. In fact that's the reason I am getting a lawyer this time around, if I DO NOT get supervision I get my license suspended. Not something I want to play around with.

On your other point about a lawyer from the county you have to appear in, that's why I'm going to stick with the guy I had picked up. It doesn't get any better than a former prosecutor in the courthouse I have to be in..

Just wanted to say thank you to all who gave me tips etc.. and especially to Herman who forwarded me to a great lawyer who was able to keep me on the road.
