340 Mexico - information

Inspired by this thread ( http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/sho...ght=340+mexico ) I'd like to find out more about the 340 Mexico berlinetta's.

I know there's 0222AT, 0224AT and 0226AT, but what are their stories? And are there any pics of these babies in action or just being beautiful (well, ok, there probably not the pretiest Ferraris' ever built, but they do command attention). And where are they now? Barchetta.cc doesn't seem all that up to date.

Oh, and happy easter!

These cars play a modest, but ongoing, role in B.S. Levy's "Montezuma's Ferrari" - a fictionalized chronicle of the 1952 Carrera Panamerica.

One of them has been at the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Museum (Auburn, Indiana) for years. This one belonged to the salvage magnate.

i don't know what it is but the wheels look too wide and the fender lips look out of place and the headlights look too small.

i don't mean to demean but am commenting on what looks period correct in my (pretty uninformed) mind.

pretty nice looking car though!

It is.

0179 EL was fitted with a Chapparral engine in 1961 and was occasionally raced by Loren McCullen of Fort Worth, Texas.
Was later fitted with the engine from Lusso #5203 when in the ownership of J. Katherine McLure (also Texas)

Yes, it is 0179 EL. According to Massini's Vignale book, the modifications seen here (air intake on hood, lights in grille removed, bumpers removed, chrome trim removed) were made during the ownership of Greg Miller in the early 1960s. In 1991, a complete restoration was begun and today the car looks like this:

and resides in the Netherlands now, if I am informed correctly.

Other question: what does the suffix 'AT' stand for?

As barchetta.cc shows, 0224AT is the one in the Auburn Cord Dusenberg Museum. It was the Luigi Chinetti/Jean Lucas car for the 1952 race. It has been owned by Larry Nicklin since 1979 and he also has a Supercharged 500K in the museum. The 340 was at the Behring/Blackhawk Ferrari display in California in 1994. At home, he has a 212 Vignale in his garage, along with a Mangusta and a very special "Indy Coupe". Earlier, Larry also owned 0226AT, the Alberto Ascari/Scotuzzi car for the 1952 race. It was seeing 0226AT in the early 1960's when I lived close to him in Fort Wayne, Indiana that gave me the "Ferrari fever". Larry was one of the founders of the Ferrari Club of America and the founding meeting was at his home. Late last year I took my 365 down for him to see. He and his wife provided my wife and I the same lunch served at his home for the founding meeting of the FCA.

Regards,

Jim Walker

I saw 0224AT at the Auburn Cord Museum in Auburn, Indiana last summer. The car is quite original, but is not running to the best of my knowledge. Its the only Ferrari in the museum, but if you like pre-war American cars, the museum is definitely worth a visit

It's been there many years; I first saw it in 1995, and these were taken in 2001.

But I agree, the car certainly looks nice!
