Show and Tell

Weather came reasonably good for heading out after blue-fin tuna so off we went last Wednesday and Thursday.

The spot we go to is a rock called Pedra Blanca and is 28 kms offshore from the southern tip of Tassie and 38kms from the nearest boat ramp. You can see it in one of the pics. It’s highest point is 60m.

A couple of years ago, a group of scientists were camped there studying a rare lizard that only lives there. The weather started to get bad with the swell increasing very quickly. They radioed for help and left their tents on the ledge seen in the pic and climbed to higher ground. The swell was very strong and increased to 8m with a 2m chop on top of it. They were up 45 m and were being washed with heavy spray. One of the party of 4 was washed over. A chopper came and despite 45knots winds was able to lower one of the crew (a brave lad) who hitched each of the 3 scientists who were lifted out one by one with the chopper guy being last off whilst getting heavily sprayed by the waves. They searched for the guy who had fallen in but never found him.

On the Wednesday we caught one each averaging around 15-20kgs. On Thursday, we only got one between us. On the sounder though, I’ve never seen so many tuna as I saw that day. There were thousands of them ranging from over 100kgs to the smaller ones we had caught. The bigger ones were in 50m with the smaller ones about 15m above them but they stayed on the bottom and wouldn’t come to the surface, apart from the one we got.

The “breeze” came up on the way home and we got a rough ride back. Needless to say, have been thoroughly enjoying blue-fin sashimi as well as very rare steaks of it on the BBQ. As a matter of fact, so have lots of friends we have given some to.

Whilst we were out there, we had a couple of breaks from tuna fishing and did a bit of bottom fishing to catch a couple of stripey trumpeter which are also delectable tucker.

Just been looking at the forecast and we might be going out again tomorrow.

I'm dribbling down my T-shirt - tuna sashimi is one of my favourite things in the world! It must have been a good weekend for fishing as my boy (who's ex-Tas BTW) was off Cairns and they got 15 Coral Trout with Gaz getting FOD with a 10 pounder. I'm home eating vegtables...

Yes, particularly blue-fin tuna sashimi is superb when treated correctly during capture and preparation. The Japanese pay good second hand Ferrari prices for a blue-fin around 200kgs. Yummy stuff indeed!

Yep, it always has that forboding nature about it. Maybe because of it's remoteness or the seals and odd big white around there. At the same time though, it is quite spectacular and even beautiful.

The things man does for science! Or for that matter, the things we do to catch a fish or 2.

It depends on a combination of swell and wind expectation and the direction they are from. Generally, you wouldn't go there if the swell is bigger than 2 metres (unless there was not going to be any wind at all). If the breeze is going to be fresher than say 20knts, you would stay home.

Heading out in about 5 hrs, want a real early start as the breeze is forecast to freshen early afternoon and want to be back before that...oh, also because the light will be better for good pics of the giants we hope to catch.

Off to the farter now.

Got up at 5 yesterday and had the boat launched by 6.30. Being still dark, we had to go slower at first because you couldn’t see the swells. We got there around 8 and had the first blue fin landed by 8.30. It was buzzing out there! We saw this big seal up on the rock bleeding profusely that obviously had come out second best after an encounter with a white.

Kerrari, if by chance you know anyone heading your way from here in the next few days, can give them a nice piece of sashimi for you. The fish are on ice and will be cut up tomorrow. They are always better left whole (after being bled and gutted) on ice and carved up after 2 days.

Yep, they're yummy tucker but not big by tuna standards. We've caught them to 76kgs and one guy got a 122kg one 2 weeks ago. The big ones are there, you can see them on the sounder but are staying deep.

mate do you find a taste difference between the bigger and smaller stuff?

i know with many fish (snapper for one) the smaller ones are much tastier than the big old bastards...

With many fish, that is the case but it certainly isn't with blue fin. Just have a look at what the Japanese pay for huge fish around 200kgs. I can't pick any lesser quality of taste between smaller or larger blue fin.

nice

that rocky outcrop bears more than a passing resemblance to seal rocks at phillip island here. wild waters, big seals...and bigger sharks!

i assume youd get some giants down there given the colder water.

my grandfather used to take his 15' half cab out of the westernport heads and said on a couple of occasions he had a big shadow under the front of the boat...that extended out the back too
