Two car shows -- one 2nd place award
I took my 328 GTS to two car shows this weekend. One was a small one on Saturday with no awards. The second was on Sunday in Shelton, WA. Over 300 cars.
The organizers chose an interesting awards strategy. Every car registered got a sheet listing 20 award categories (like best 1950's, best Mopar, best Ford, best engine, best hot rod.) The sign to place on each car allowed each owner to choose which categories in which to compete. Naturally, I chose the only ones that really fit -- best import and best post-1960's. With so many hot rods, best paint and best engine were just way out of the league, especially given that the awards were chosen by members of the organizing committee...and the group admitted that they weren't experts by any means. Being a small town, most of the cars were hot rods and resto-modded Chevy and Fords. Not many imports. One guy showed up in a poor-running '89 Countach (sounded like a replica running a small block, but it was a real car with a misfiring 12-cyl.) A bunch of VW Type 181 Things came as a group, as well as a hot-rodded 1969 Porsche with a small block V8. Somehow, I got shut out of the Best Import award -- the car that won.....? .....a Nash Metropolitan! I actually know the owner, who is a nice woman (who also owns Triumphs.) She walked up to get the award saying "I beat the Ferrari!!!" I told her I was going to contest, insisting that because the bodies were made in the US by Nash/Hudson, shipped to England to have the engines installed by Austin, then brought back and sold by Nash/Hudsonm technically they weren't imports. Of course, I was kidding. She also took second place in Best Orphan category. She was so happy and surprised, she was trembling. Then I won second place for Best Post-1960s. Lots of cars competing in that category, so I was surprised. Got a nice trophy sign with a picture of my car. But everyone seemed to like the F-car...so many positive comments on the Blu Medio paint! Plus tons of the typical "How fast does it go" and "How much did it cost?" And over the whole weekend, only one kid sat on the car...probably helped by the signs I posted on Sunday saying "please don't lean on or push against me -- my bodywork is thinner than Nicole Richie after a month on the Karen Carpenter signature binge and purge diet...consequently, I'm easy to dent." |

Grats on the award! It sounds like it was a strong show to win in!
Being beaten by a Nash isn't necessarily the worst thing that could happen

I should mention that I've never gone to shows to win awards.
I've probably been to a couple hundred shows. The only car that's ever received any awards has been the Ferrari, which now has a third place and a second place to its name. My Corvettes, Triumphs, Packard (and all the other cars I've brought to shows over the years) never won anything, and that never made me have any less fun. |

Only if I was in a Cadillac
![]() Beep, Beep (Hopefully you're old enough to understand that reference!) Actually, my mother's first car was a 1964 Rambler American. Right before my parents married, my father was T-boned by a city heavy work truck in it. It was totaled, and my dad broke the steering wheel with his hands and bent the bottom of the dash with his knees!!! Come to think of it, I wouldn't be here if not for that Rambler -- my mom was also hit while driving that car. The attorney who handled her case decided to introduce her to an attorney friend of his...my father! |
