Was changing oil today and as I was warming then car up prior to draining the oil, up on the lift. As I'm looking around, it starts leaking gas! Banjo fitting off the gas pump between the accumulator and pump. It was a easy fix/tightening but what would cause it to start leaking all of a sudden? Dumb luck?

Either the banjo is lose or copper washer is bad.

Hope my other fittings don't decide to come loose all of the sudden!

That is very common because people tighten that banjo with stress on the pipe connecting the 2 components. If you did it the same way it will spring a leak again.

Ahh got it, makes sense. I did try to put a wrench on the proximal nut but it was hard to do so with the electrical fittings. Will keep an eye on it, thanx!

For those of us that don't know what a banjo fitting is, can someone post a pic please?

Here is a pic of the pump and accumulator from an older thread. The banjo (as Miketuason shows) is the one on the pump. It is a hard line connecting the pump to the accumulator. If you try to tighten it, it can transfer some of the torque onto the hard line which tends to twist and can twist back and loosen the connector (as Rifledriver points out).

I hate banjo fittings connected to hard lines. I had recurrent problems on the hydraulic power steering(+clutch) pump on my 993 turbo due to those lines, so much so that I deleted the power steering(and the power assist on the clutch) and got a manual rack/manual clutch...

Banjo fittings are very Victorian but work well when their limitations are understood. Tightening one correctly requires a counter hold on the base fitting or it is a useless endeavor. Likewise tightening one with a hard line as shown without relieving the stress on the hard line is certain to cause a leak eventually. Not a good thing on a high pressure fuel fitting so close to the exhaust manifold.
