Thx Rob, she's really fun to fly. The 310 HP engine of the -22 (versus the 180 HP of the -20) is extremely helpful in the hot, humid climes of Southeast Asia. Not to mention that each of the eTAWS, SkyWatch, and Stormscope are unbelievable pilots aids. Moreover, the CAPS chute provides additional peace of mind given the often inhospitable terrain we fly over (think palm-tree or rubber plantations for miles). Its the perfect plane for me.

Given where gas prices were as of late, I've always flow Lean of Peak after approaching cruise. At about 65% power LOP and no significant head-wind or tail-wind I'm doing about 155 knots True sipping 12.5 GPH. If I go WOT, she should be able to hit in the high 160's. Heading Northbound from Singapore into Malaysia generally provides you with some tailwinds so I've hit close to 200 knots before I ease her back at altitude which is nice.

How's your IFR training going? I'm going to head back to the US - most likely in March 2009 - to obtain my Instrument Rating in the same accelerated manner I got my PPL. Really looking forward to it. Then I can play with the big boys -

It has been in a holding pattern all summer. Too much other stuff going on, all I need is to take written and then checkride. Rest of year is better so I hope to finish it off.

Wow, that's a beautiful plane you got there. I dream of a TBM 850 one day. For now I'd be happy with a Mooney 201 though!

I've flown one only once by myself....and I've always thought I'd love to own one. It has the "systems management feel" a big aircraft, in the package of a fast sports car animal. And that aircraft blends the two worlds beautifully.

they make a pilot feel like a pilot. And yours is perfect.

Thank you very much. I really appreciate your compliments. The airplane is the "best of the best" in my opinion. It does feel like a big aircraft (I know, I fly an AA 767 for a living), and yet it
retains a sports car feel. Ferrari of the air - has a nice ring doesn't it?

Thanks again.

My Baron. Full Garmin panel, MX20, 2 430Ws, 330 transponder. Sandel EFIS. Engines are custom built, .020 over, 540 CI, with RAM cams, ported cylinders, balanced, etc., Plane does about 210 kts at 75%, but the fuel burn is a little high: 40 gallons per hour.

Why is your manifold pressure that high without the engine running?

Post Pics of your or your favorite plane

I like the aviation section as it has gotten me interested in getting back to flying. With the cost of planes and gas where they are, it won't be too expensive at all.

While this isn't my plane, it is one of my favorites (Wildcat).

Second plane is the front of a dive bomber pulled out of lake Michigan. Apparently there are several hundred of these down on the bottom from student pilots learning to land and take off on a floating deck (carrier training). If you want one, you can pull it up. This one was cleaned up and painted. Looked really good, nothing works, but looked good..

Guess the engine....will it fit in my 328?

I just discovered this thread. Who knew, airplanes on Ferrarichat.

I have two planes with stories (the good kind). The first is a 1946 Aeronca 7AC Champ. Growing up in Florida I used to hang out at a small grass strip where a couple of guys were always restoring classic aircraft, usually cubs. One of the guys was a retired Eastern Airlines Captain (Paul) who I had know since I was little. In 1988 he and Ed were restoring a Champ. When it was nearly finished Paul let me fly it, and then said "Dave, I won't tell you what I have in it, but for . .X. . it's yours." He essentially gave it to me. I did have to borrow money to purchase it though, and after a few years life took me in a direction where I would have to sell it. Instead, I talked my Dad into paying off the loan and keeping the airplane. It is now a Father and Son aircraft and we hangar it in Florida.

The second is a 1963 Schweizer 2-22 Glider. This is the exact aircraft that I first soloed in at age 14. This glider belonged to Lennox Flight School which was started and owned by two women, Pat and Harriott. They purchased the Glider new from the factory in Elmira, NY and are two of 6 women in the National Soaring Hall of Fame. Pat was my flight instructor and Harriott would fly the Citabria towplane. Unfortunately, Hurricane Charlie passed over Gardner Airport where their operation was and destroyed all of their aircraft except this Glider which was under restoration in a Hangar. Sadly, shortly after the Hurricane, Harriott passed on. When I heard that Pat had finished the restoration and was selling the glider I had to have it. Life has been busy, and I haven't flown the glider since it has been in my possession, buy it makes me happy to take care of it. It is hangared in Florida also. In three years when my daughter is 14, I plan to teach her to fly it. Coincidentally, my Father soled in that very same Glider before I was born.

Dave

My two biplanes

In addition to my 328GTS and assorted other cars I have two airplanes, both variants of the Pitts Special. Both are homebuilts, one a Pitts S1S is primarily for aerobatics and the other is a one-off purpose built Pitts racer. Both are raced in the biplane class at the Reno Air Races, although the racer is 50-60MPH faster than the S1S. The racer has qualified on the race course at 241+MPH and will hit 275MPH or so in a straight line. With a four cylinder engine.

The first photo shows both airplanes on the ground, and the second shows the racer on the race course at Reno.

My plane and navigator. This thing is my ride to SW Florida each winter and I'm struggling with what to replace it with as the next step.

Everytime I flew the SNJ or T-28, it makes me marvel all the more at my first airplane, a Aeronca 7BCM. What a fabulous machine - nothing can beat it for smiles per dollar.

Compared to my Cigarette Boat that's pretty good. I get 60 kts at 75% burning 40 GPH.
