REPOST. We have been thru this before already. Check out thread of old photos. This pic was taken at Fiorano very late 1973 or early 1974. It is from "Autosprint" magazine. That car was tested by Regazzoni also at Le Castellet/Paul Ricard but by the time the program was over and they didn't race the 312 P's any longer. It must be one of the very last 312 Ps built, possibly 0894 or 0896. Marcel Massini
Thank you. I knew about the post you mention, but I was curious about the chassisnumber! Anyone who is sure about the number?
Nobody will know this chassis number. Not even the factory. It most probably was one of the very last 312 Ps built. And the last one built was clearly 0896. There was never a 0898 and 0900 is the one built from spares at Diena & Silingardi's in Modena, then sold 16 December 1977 by the factory through Crepaldi to Chinetti for US$ 36.000. Marcel Massini
Marcel, would 0890 be an option as this car had an airtake at the right sight of the car Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
As said before, we will never know. Suggest you ask Giacomo Caliri or Mauro Forghieri. Marcel Massini
I'm a little confused. I thought 0900 was the number given to Piper for his 330P4 replica? Was the car that was sold to Chinetti in 1977 a 312P? What happened to this car? -Jarrett
There it is....0900 is a 312PB and 0900 is a 330P4. I think there is a third as well, but I can't remember what it is.
Don't tell me you don't know that! There are TWO (2), not three, cars that use "0900". One is the Piper P4 whatever, the other one is a 312 P (PB for some) built up from spares by Diena & Silingardi in Modena, on behalf of the factory, sold 77 thru Crepaldi to Chinetti. Still with Coco today. No race history. But genuine chassis. I have all the factory papers for this car. Have seen this car in Modena, photographed it, etc. Looks like a normal 312 P(B). Marcel Massini
I see, thanks for the clarification. To the best of my knowledge I have never seen pictures of the 0900 312P(B). Interesting story though -Jarrett
This photo shows 0900 at Chinetti's in 1992. This car was built up from spares with a spare chassis, by Diena & Silingardi in Modena in 1974. It was then stored at Diena's until 1977 and sold via Crepaldi of Milan on 16 December 1977 to Chinetti, who paid US$ 36.000. I have the paperwork. In 1977 or 1978 it was displayed by Chinetti during the NY auto show. On 16 April 1993 it was for sale at the 1st Annual Spring Auction in Trenton/NJ, but didn't sell. I have the auction catalogue. In January 1997 it was back in Italy, now at Sauro Mingarelli's shop in Bologna. Today still with Chinetti. Chassis type 623/012 Engine type 001/1N, internal #44 Gearbox type 623/LM, internal #3 COPYRIGHT MARCEL MASSINI Image Unavailable, Please Login
Heard from a London friend that the car was recently sold to Paul Knapfield and probably also the 512M replica 1038 ?????? When you look at www.barron-racing.com the "collection site" is down........maybe it needs an update Hairy you're working at Roelofs, is the car in the shop in Rheden? Maybe you can confirm the cars are sold by Bosch to Knapfield.
Answers to many questions presented in this thread can be found in Christian Hewet's book "Ferrari 312 P/B" by Cavalleria ISBN 3-905268-01-9, which is sadly out of print, but can be found if you look hard enough. The question of the chassis number of the bizarre 312P being tested at Fiorano and Le Castellet is answered on Pgs. 104-105. The book claims that this car is #0882. It explains that Mauro Forghieri wanted to revisit development of the typo 623/008 chassis, (2.22 meter wheelbase) and 0882 was the only short wheelbase chassis available to them at that time, just prior to being sold (gifted?) to Jacky Ickx. This book also discusses #0900. Refer to Pgs. 41,50,77,79 and the registry if 312P chassis numbers on Pgs. 144 & 145. It explains that #0900 was a reserve chassis, and was put to some use as an experimental car. A detailed examination of #0900 supports this. It's frame has been lengthened to 623/12 specification,(2.34 meter wheelbase) as were #0886, #0888, #0892, and #0896. It is also interesting to note that the roll bar of #0900 is unlike that of any other 312P. It appears to have been revised to facilitate a snorkel air intake cover that was being developed for Ferrari's aborted 1974 sports car campaign. This snorkel air intake would have been blocked by the normal roll bar configuration found on the other nine remaining 312Ps. When the factory commissioned Giordano Diena & Andrea Silingardi's Sport Auto of Modena to restore #0900 for eventual sale, it was fitted with the attractive bodywork configuration seen on 312Ps at the 1972 Imola 500km. It is also interesting to note that only chassis #0880, 0882, and 0884 were restored by the factory prior to their sale to collectors. All other 312Ps were sent to nearby shops for restoration. Chassis #0900 presently lives in Salt Lake City, Utah U.S.A. , and is currently for sale. When did Chinetti sell this car? Who is the current owner? Looks like a very respectable collection in the background. Thanks for posting the pictures. -Jarrett
Chinetti sold the car fairly recently. The car is presently owned by Steve Harris Imports, and is for sale.
I have a few comments: 0882 was not sold or gifted to Jacky Ickx. 0882 was sold by the factory to Harley Cluxton on 13 November 1972. 0884 was given by the factory to Jacky Ickx on 20 October 1972. It belongs since the mid-1970s to Pierre Bardinon. The factory did NOT commission Giordano Diena & Andrea Silingardis Sport Auto of Modena to restore 0900 for an eventual sale. In 1977 (when 0900 was sold by the factory to Crepaldi) Giordano and Andrea were little boys (kids). Sport Auto in Modena at the time was run by their fathers, GIANNI Diena and ALDO Silingardi, now deceased. Today, of course, Sport Auto Modena is run by Giordano Diena and Andrea Silingardi. Prior to the sale of 0900 two months ago Chinetti had it stored in a celebritys garage. No fewer than four brokers (T. J., T. H., B. B. and J. S.) were involved in the deal to Salt Lake City. Marcel Massini
Well, I guess we may never know the identity of the 312 P that was cloaked in such an unattractive envelope testing for that aborted 74' season. As for Sport Auto: Giordano & Andrea or Gianni & Aldo= same concern
Fathers Gianni & Aldo both worked for the factory racing departement before they opened up their own mechanical shop in the city of Modena. Sons did not. Sorry for being so pedantic. Marcel Massini
Shecky, I love the pictures! Do you have any pictures of the Ferrari GTs in the background? I'm especially interested in the 330. Regards, Art S.
The 312P "continuation / replica / Fake (whatever!!!) with s/n 0900 has traded several times recently and NO I HAD NO INVOLVEMENT WITH THE SALE OF THIS CAR WHATSOEVER! Nuff said! Cheers, Bill Noon
