I'm really starting to get worried about the crash safety of the 360. Are they designed to separate like that, or are they MISdesigned and this is the result?

The driver got lucky that the buring parts were over -----> there

I'm no engineer, and as I remember the engine isn't a stressed part of the structure in a 360 (as I believe it is in an Enzo, Carrera GT, F1 car, etc), but in some respects, it could be an advantage if the engine drops out without compromising the rigidity of the passenger compartment (ie. engine heaviest single component, without it in a crash situation the car should lose momentum more quickly, therefore less likely to hit anything else hard), however I would be absolutely amazed if the car is designed that way - conversely once the engine has separated from the car, a rear impact would be far more serious and far more likely to breach the passenger compartment.

About F-cars breaking in half: As far as I understand, Formula 1 cars are designed to shatter at impact, save for the driver's safety compartment, thus expending as much as possible of the kinetic energy. The more energy that goes into tearing the car apart, the less energy there is to tear the driver apart.
I'd imagine the same principle is applied to the Ferrari roadcars. Based on this and the famed Malibu Enzo Wipe, is seems that F-cars are designed to ditch their engines in the event of a sideways impact, which is a bigger risk in a center-engined layout than a conventional fron-engined. Wether or not this has any effect on rear-impact safety, I have no idea.

A lot of times the split happens in the middle of the passenger compartment, especially with spiders.
