For all those that want to make a post of 'How much it costs to maintain a Ferrari', I thought the following would be of interest. I got a wild hair to log all the maintenance costs of my '92 348ts. Now here is a car in excellent condition. The only pattern of problematic work that has been taken care of (Now bulletproof) is the A/C. Other than that, all of the expenses were simply from 15 & 30K services and other items one would expect from ownership of such a car. I pasted the following from my XL spreadsheet. The list totals $33,675. I AM missing maintenance records from 5/95 to 5/99 that I am trying to track down, so lets add about $10K for those years, totalling $45K. So we have 14 years of maintenance on a car that has 53K miles on it. That's about $.85 per mile driven. nice to see that you're driving the car! It would be cool to compare this against lower mileage cars...I bet the cost per mile goes down as you put more miles on the car....since supposedly Ferraris are meant to be driven!
Thanks for the info. I'd like to add this is from new and while picking up the same car, the first owners have already sorted out most of the problems. Im a bit surprised about these items you spent money on: Why the "Smog and 02 sensors replaced" have two different prices? There's a lot of Adjusted items there. "Install soft roof top","Front spoiler damage","R/Rear wheel scratched" and "Flat tyre" are some items that I dont think should be included. If you crashed a Fcar because of poor driving and it costed you $20k. You cant really added it into the maintence of an Fcar. Once again, it was nice to know this, thanks.
HA! With my foot, I'm probably going to put the car on EBay next week. I am not driving it, as my right foot (Fractured heel) is 45-60 days away from properly dealing with the brake pedal. By that time, the crappy weather will be here and not much driving until the Spring.
HEHE! The only problematic thing on THIS car was the AC. I'm glad I did not pay for it. I also did not add a $4K stereo that is in the car. Talk about being blasted out of your seat! WOW!
BTW, here is the car. It is a beauty! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
wow, that's scary. total cost of maint on my 89 328 with 28k, less than 8k(afaik). that includes one major, a clutch, new a/c and tires. could be missing some receipts as i am not the original owner and am spotty before '99. will need brakes soon. Other than that, everything operates well.
Install hood struts and inspect the brakes for $528? 2k for O2 sensors? You can see when the service was done at a certified dealer, and when it was not! Still, it's all worth it in the end.
Great post, PeterS! This is the kind of real-world data that the Brotherhood needs. I was surprised that the front crank seal repair at 12,000 miles and 1 year wasn't a warranty item, for instance.
Thanks! I've been on this board for three years and wondered why nobody has ever done a thread like this. It IS sobering to look at the numbers. I think it adds more of a reason to buy an F car that is a few years old. Let somebody else get the bugs worked out!!! BTW, how many years / miles does Ferrari warrant their new cars for and do they offer extended maintenance plans?
At the 599 unveiling at Pebble Beach this month, Andy (CEO FNA?) told me that 10 year extended bumper-to-bumper warranties were available for sale.
It's a great deal when you think about it. Ferrari already has a standard warranty, so you are paying years in advance for an extended warranty. This caps your expenses. I could see long-term leasing companies requiring this sort of thing eventually.
See, what's cool about this sort of real world data is that you can compare the price of dealer work with what your cost would be for doing the job (an easy one at that) yourself. $4,500 gets you a new clutch, turnkey, at a dealership. OK, that's fair. But... $470 buys you the 348 clutch/slave throwout bearing, $30 for some seals/rings, $50 for some quality tranny fluid, and another $200 gets your clutch resurfaced by pros. So $750 and you've done the job yourself (with better tranny fluid!). If 6 hours of your time is worth $3,750, then you know which way you should go.
Wow... $846.96 to "change all fluids". Incredible.... C'mon F-car owners... the 246 GTS is up on jack stands in my garage right now while I change its tranny fluid. Get your hands dirty!
If you're serious, PM me details. I may have an interested buyer. My car is over $1/mile in maintenance for the 5 years I've owned it.
I think the maintenance from about the 30K mark on is pretty much in line with what we have all come to regard as "reasonable". I am really surprised at all of the work needed within a few months of the car being bought brand new. $1800 AC fix on a 3 month old car? Then a $66 AC fix a few days later. You just gotta know it was the $66 part the first time, then another 2K+ AC repair a couple of days shy of its 1yr old mark? I just have to believe if I had just paid 117K (in 1992 dollars at that) for a brand new car and got hit with a $1800 AC bill less than 4 months later, I would have another line entry "bail $50" --- After thinking more, I realize the more plausible explanation for the AC work is that it was listed in the records (as it should be), but the cost covered by Ferrari. In that case I don't think its right to count it into the maintenance total. Great post BTW, I found it very interesting.
I simply listed the amount. It was probably charged to Ferrari as warranty work, but I listed it nevertheless.
That car sure has had problems...my 1982 BB512i has cost me less than 1/2 of that amount in almost 4 years of ownership!
I've owned a 360 Modena for 10 months now, and counting the 36 month scheduled maintenance ($5200...I bought it used) I've had maintenance and repairs total about $6500 or so. Not cheap...but worth it!
