I am new to this board. I am considering the purchase of a 1986 328 GTS with 42,800 miles on it. I have run a carfax and it has no issues. The price of the car is 32,900. Is this a good deal? Thank you for your time.

    Regards,

    Josh

    Condition, maintanance records, PPI results?

Search the past threads and you'll find your answer.

The price is cheap for a 328. I'd worry about the condition at that price. A great 328 will fetch north of $40k.

yeah, we need more details on the car's service history, current condition, tools/books, accident history...etc. at that price it is very cheap.

If you're in Temecula, we have a couple of excellent Ferrari techs here in San Diego who can/should do a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) if you're serious about the car.

I have a 328 and they're great cars, but like others have said any Ferrari can be a money pit if it has deferred maintenance. Sometimes a $50K 328 that has been fanatically maintained is a better deal that a $40K 328 that's only seen Jiffy Lube over the last decade.

I recently went through the hunt for a 328. I investigated about a dozen cars, and none that were less than $45,000 were worth taking home unless you are a Ferrari mechanic or like ratty looking cars. I paid a little more than $50k for mine and think it was worth the extra money.

I am not into ratty cars. I currently own a 97 BMW M3, 98 BMW 540i 6-speed and a 1984 Supra with 40,000 miles on it. Another question, if the car is owned by a third or fourth owner, and is now at a dealership with limited or no records, is there a way to somehow get past records and find where the car was originally purchased? I would even be willing to purchase the old records minus the owners names for confidentiality reasons if available. Thank you all again for your time.

It sounds like your question is : should I buy as my first Ferrari a car that has no service history and is priced about USD 10000 under market - easy : no

If there is no evidence of recent service that means a major belt change service for starters - that service could reveal a host of other issues - it also means the mileage itself cannot be validated - and there are almost certainly other reasons for the price

The milage is verifiable through the carfax i ran. Other than that, is there a way to find records through dealerships or somehow finding out who the previous owners were? Thank you.

OK I have read the other posts on this car. Thank you for getting those to me. Does anyone who has seen the car think 32,900 is a decent price? I have them down to that. If I were to buy it and then have a major service done on it, what do you all think? Thank you.

    Regards,

    Josh

how verifiable is mileage from a carfax anyway? all one has to do is disconnect the odo after a carfax pickup point, drive thousands of miles, reconnect the odo before another carfax pickup point, drive a few miles, and it looks neat and tidy as a verifiably low mileage car.

as for finding records, send the VIN to ferrari market letter and see if they can tell you where it was sold new. contact that dealer to check if they have any history on the car. at least it's a start.

OK I am having Ferrari of Denver do a 4 hour inspection on the car on Monday at $110 an hour. I think it is a small investment on a purchase just to make sure I don't get screwed. Thank you all for your help so far.

Dealership flaked.... See update on local news:
    http://www.9news.com/news/local/article.aspx?storyid=90505

Hope no fchatters lost any money with this outfit. The same owner who sold the 328 had a 348 for sale, wonder if he tried to sell it via these same guys and lost it.

Used exotic cars must be a difficult business. This is the 2nd independent dealer in the Denver metro to have this type of issue, and the 3rd to go out of business.

Everybody seems to think 328's are worth mid 40's but I keep getting offers in the mid 30's and the only thing mine needs is the major. I'd be happy to get $40 for it.

Holy crap. Well as many of you know, I bought my car from these guys in October of 2006. I never met any of them in person. I negotiated the price over the phone. I wired $1,000 and had them take the car to Ferrari of Denver for a PPI. I flew into Denver a week later after Ferrari of Denver completed the major. I had a young kid from the Castle Pines dealer pick me up at the airport in an X5 and we drove to Washington Mutual where I wired the rest of the money into their account. I was given a bill of sale because there was a loan on the car, so no title. He then drove me to Ferrari of Denver where I picked up the car. The title was mailed to me a few weeks later. I feel for all the people who these people have screwed, they weren't the most professional people I have delt with, thats for sure. Thank you James for the info. As far as my car goes, it has turned out to be a nice driver. I drive to Irvine for Cars and Coffee almost every Saturday.

    Regards,

    Josh Ferguson
