I cannot say I think much of all those heavily modified 308s around these boards. However, what about this: 308 gtb New intake system (computer efi) New race headers and open exhaust Race wheels and tires Upgraded brakes Upgrades shocks and springs Upgraded A-arms and sway bars New fiberglass body panels Upgraded aftermarket frame/chassis Upgraded seat and interior Still a Ferrari 308?
Theres a thread all about my modded Mondy, and yes I still see it as a Ferrari http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=94536
The Ferrari Formula 1 team 'modifies' the car for every race. So does that mean it is not a Ferrari Formula 1 car? Mod's rule! 'nuff said
Dont knock it till u try it! Of course it is still a Ferrari 308. I think we all have modded our 308's to some extent, some more than others! It is nice to have a 23 year old classic hold its own with the modern sport cars of today. Cheers
(Said in a friendly, fun voice and with a BIG grin on my face) Holds? i pass modern cars on the track quite a bit... and some pass me. In the end it amazes me how well these decades old(!) 308s do against modern alternatives.
Indeed, I was trying to be diplomatic about it. I have blown the doors off of a few modern sports cars much to their amazement. You will have an even bigger grin when u add some boost. Its i addcitive too! You will always want more and more baby! Cheers
To say it is no longer a Ferrari is about like saying you are no longer you if you change your haircut and start wearing glasses
reading the list and noting the chassis modification would lead me to think of a 288gto clone. due to the nature of the 308 subframe and chassis build it isn't easy to modify and retain the same shape, however to make a 288 clone that is what would be needed. as to whether or not that is still a ferrari is debatable becouse you hve two polar sides to that issue. and no i can't spell ;O
No matter what you do to a Pontiac Fiero, no matter how you make it look, it's still a Pontiac Fiero. If that is true, then no matter what you do to a Ferrari, it's still a Ferrari. So, what really makes a Ferrari a Ferrari is the VIN number. Bob Wassam
I think it depends on how the car looks. Most of those mods are upgrades (nothing wrong in that) but the fibreglass body panels could be a deal breaker if they don't look right, or the change the look of the car.
I was talking to some factory guys at the 1994 National Meet in Monterrey and one of them said they considered any modifications to be sacreligious. They even had a term for it, which I have forgotten, but I think it translated to "pig" or "pork" or something like that.
The car had a VIN number on it's chassis, however, the chassis has been upgraded (replaced) by an aftermarket component.
Those of you that may have seen the picture in my user profile may know where this thread is headed. I have a project on the back burner that involves converting that P4 replica with 308 engine into a street legal car. Right now it is a full track car. I need to think about stuff like mufflers, upgrading the 80's EFI to something that doesn't interface with a Commadore 64 computer, wheels, tires, windshield wiper, title, etc. Maybe it's better to sell it and get a Stratos replica? Or maybe sell it and get an original Itialian formula-type car (http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=113756). Anyway I wondered if it would be appropriate to post stuff about this car in this 308 section or if I have to go over to the very dark, dark side, in the "Off Topic" section.
Seriously, I think that most of it would be in the Technical section. Lots of discussion of chassis mods, 308 EFI, etc. Heck, there's a guy with a Pontiac drivetrain in a 308 asking about shocks and such. You'll fit in fine there.
You need to visit California more. I think that sums it up. A 308 with a Chevy engine is a collection of parts, IMO. The integrity of the original machine is gone. Or the integrity of the Fiero, of course <cough>.
If they were factory guys they only consider it sacreligious because the money didn't go into thier pockets. When it comes to Ferraris.. I think modding/upgrading them makes them more user friendly..especially if you plan to do more than polish it and look at it in the garage! I've enjoyed upgrading my 308, with every change it gets better!
