Islero thread

Dear Vintage spotters,

I would like this thread to be the ultimate Islero thread.
If anyone has any Islero info or pictures, please feel free to contribute.
A lot of cars still needs to be identified, and we need all the help we can get.
These cars are very rare, and because they are not that spectacular like a Miura or Countach, I think these cars are a little ignored sometimes at meetings, and finding pictures of these cars is very difficult. So please help!

The main sources for Islero info are:

1. http://members.aol.com/luigidvm/index.html

2. http://www.lamborghiniregistry.com

3. this thread, to help these two guys.

I would like to kick of with this nice picture of Ferruccio Lamborghini posing with the prototype Islero, #6000. A nice way to start I think.

Kindest regards,
Marcel Wallenburg

Islero is a very nice looking classic L car. You seldom see them around.

I loved this cars for many years, it is in my opinion the most brilliant display of constrained GT design of the 60's. Its just clean simple and understated - and its still a Lamborghini

I went to Norwood Performance in Dallas a few weeks ago and there was an Islero that was said to have been owned by Ferrucio himself. I'm not sure of the serial number but I remember that Mike told me that the wooden fuel filler cap was made for Ferrucio because of his interest in boating. It may be the one in the first picture.

A great understated GT car that had the misfortune of being marketed alongside the Miura (which one to buy?).

The styling reminds me of a car that came later.

What kind of room does the Islero have in it?

Thank you Fred,

Wonderful reading. Imagine that you actually could go on holiday to Italy, buy an Islero at the factory (for about the same price as an Miura!), meet Ferruccio himself, cruise it around there for a few weeks, and then having it shipped to the US, how romantic!

Hi Philippe,

Yes, this is the same car. Great to see a prototipo driven on the roads.
I know the car was present at the 40 Anni party at the Lamborghini factory in May 2003. Do you have more pictures of that event as well?

Best regards,
Marcel

Hi James,

Ferruccio's personal car: Islero #6201, owned by Paul von Heeder of Texas. This Islero was originally owned by Ferruccio himself and has some custom touches that are ascribed to him, such as a wooden gas cap (supposedly because of his love of boating), quilted interior panels, and high compression engine.

Did you make any pictures in Dallas?

Best regards,
Marcel

Great shots, very good pictures!

The red Islero 400 GT is #6096, owned by Lou Herrin, who does the fantastic Islero website http://members.aol.com/luigidvm/index.html
A very nice guy!

The golden Islero 400 GTS should be #6447.

Thanks a lot!
Marcel

In the last (engine bay) photo. What were the 4 studs, welded to the intake cam covers for? I've never seen that before, looks added on by someone.

Here are some pics I took of the car at the last 2 ItalianCarFests.

The car is on display this weekend at the Dallas AutoRama. I will take some more pics and some detail pics to post here.

Hey Garrick,

Thanks for posting these pictures.
It would be nice if you also could take some pictures of the engine,
and the chassis/engine/body number plates in the engine compartment.
Here's an example.

Islero Prototipo #6000

Here are two other picture of s/n 6000.

This is how the first Islero appeared at the 1968 Geneva Motor Show and in the factory literature. This car originally had Boranni wire wheels pictured above, that apparently did not stay with the car. The second owner reports that when the car was sold after the Geneva, Switzerland show, the car had acquired the Miura style wheels that would become standard equipment. The car also acquired this three spoke steering wheel and some modifications to the centre console.

I have never seen any pictures of this car at the 1968 Geneva Motor Show.
Anybody?

Ciao!
Marcello

This page is copied from Quattroruote, March 1968, from their report on new cars at the Geneva Auto Show. I'll see if I can find a picture of the Islero on display at the show itself.
