today after what we call around here, the Church of the Holy Donut (see mid atlantic section for reference) I talked Richard, owner of Radcliffe Motors, to take fellow fchatter's beautiful Dino convertible and Richard's wife's Alfa to a local park for a quick photoshoot. The sky was so lovely, I wanted to shoot something. It wasn't optimal shooting conditions but ya work with what ya have.

normally for obvious reasons I would say great looking Dino, but with the Ferrari decals and the Cavalino on the front grill its spoiled, so Great looking Alfa ! must have been a treat to have them both side-by-side.

mikeyr: I agree, but I bought it for my wife and SHE WHO CAN NOT BE DENIED demands them because, my other cars came with them...... once the novelty wears off, they will slowly disappear.

The lighting conditions kept changing on me with the sun coming in and out of the clouds. Not all of the shots came out but here are a couple more.

You can see the great job Radcliffe motors did with the interior work on the Alfa and the motor work on the Dino.

Lovely cars! Perhaps you need to explain the label situation to your wife in terms she can understand - "It's like putting Jimmy Choo labels on your Manolo Blahnik's !" the she might understand the faux pas...

Ken, i like a bunch of these photos. The one thing that's bothering me is the rule of thirds. don't take this the wrong way, but it seems like you are breaking this alot. If you don't mind, i respectfully submit a few crops i did to illustrate what i'm thinking. a polorizing filter on the lense would be a good idea on the ones with a lot of sky too. Again, great shots. here is what i would do with some of the compositions. hope this is not out of line. My favorite is the one you posted 4th from the last.

Oh sure, you and your "thirds" How dare you criticize my work! ; )

Actually, I just attended a session we had at Discovery by a wonderful photographer, Raul Touzon. www.touzonphoto.com/ One of the concepts he went over was the rule of thirds. It is something that I need to think about. I really appreciate the comments. Everytime I shoot, I learn something. Its also way important to get input from others how we can do anything better. Its especially cool when someone takes the time to critique in a thoughtful manner.

When I'm shooting, I'm thinking about angles, light direction and a bit of composition. I guess I'm mostly focused on centering the image which for the automotive portrait stuff I do works well, but for purely artistic shoots, I need to break away from that.

Ed, I was curious what settings you were using on the Bizzarini shots, specifically the rivet work. It looks like you had a nice plane of field focus with a nice fade from there. I'm assuming a low f-stop. Did you do any post processing to get the stark look?

I'm also thinking about getting a Neutral Density lens for some sky shots. That will in effect, slow down the sky and keep the lower image in line. I've played a bit with a polarizing lens with mixed results. One other thing, however, the low res images I post here aren't quite representative of the actual image. The color gets quite washed out. And, the Dino shoot started around 10:30, so the light was not optimal.
And lastly, almost all the images I posted here were uncropped. I do usually do that in Indesign.

    regards

i was trying not to be too critical because i didn't know how you would take it. But, since i know you, i thought i would take a shot. normally i wouldn't touch anybody's work and i don't like it when people touch mine. just looked to me like alot of them had the horizon and the subject right in the middle of the composition. I was taught that was a critical no-no. i thought some of the shots were really nice if they were cropped a little differently. and the best way to show that was to crop and repost. especially the first one i posted. What looks good is very subjective and also depends on what the photag is trying to accomplish. these are my opinions only and do not reflect on your work. i am by no means a great photagrapher. a new set of eyes on any project is always good. I love it when someone sees something different than me and points it out. I miss points of view all the time.

as far as the bizzarrini goes, i was playing with a new lens i picked up on a whim used from the camera store. It is a 50mm 1.4. I bought it mainly to shoot people indoors without a flash. Which i found out in that pic of nate and his wife from the same shoot is very difficult because of the narrow plane of focus. you'll notice she is in focus and he isn't.Without looking up the pics, they were probably shot at 1.4 on ae. on the processing, i usually go into selective color and jack up the neutrals and blacks. i also use a little unsharp mask. but each one is different. i play it by eye. i mess with it in raw first then usually auto levels then selective color than unsharp mask. i'm sure there are better ways to do it, i am not trained in ps.

i understand about posting low res pics on the net. i'm sure they look awesome when professionaly printed. I need to start printing more of mine.

WetPet: My wife has a different version of your rule of thirds - three cars in the barn, one is hers, the Dino Spider is accordingly not mine. I do not like this rule.
