Anyone have more information on why the Thai government is crushing Ferraris?

    Site says:
"Aparently there is a problem in Thailand with the illegal smuggling of sports cars into the country. To prevent "car laundering", the brilliant Thai government decided it was a better idea to destroy these cars to show the importers a lesson, instead of auctioning them off and using the proceeds to fund important programs to help the poor."

"The brilliant officials are seen here inspecting a Ferrari 456 GT, worth $1.2 million in Thailand, soon to be worthless."

1.2 millions Thai Bhat is about 38K USD.

Thailand has a 400% (or something like that) duty on imported cars. Where's Patpong? He'll know the number.

Yes... duties in other parts of the world are not as friendly as the US. Trinidad duty used to be 100% of hte price of the car PLUS displacement tax which gets exponentially higher once you pass 3.0L

If they want to teach the importers a lesson, they should put them in the car before they crush it.

Takes care of the recidivism problem

The law staes that any car bought into Thailand that has had the VIN numbers altered in ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM deems the car unregisterable and therefore must be crushed. From the looks of the photos there could be somethings that could be salvaged.

But remember that right now in Thailand there is NO GOVERNMENT whatsoever, when they had the coup they ruled that ALL parties were corrupt and now it is still the military in power who have doubled military budgets. Go figure. There is no such thing as military intelligence.

Is there no law? why don't they give the owner the right to ship the car back to it's place of origin? I mean ok if they don't want it that is one thing but why destroy it before letting the owner get it back?
