I searched but never found a direct replacement. What have owners been using to replace the Boxer rear deck lid shock? I have a carburated car (BB512) but believe the injected cars use the same part. The replacement is either NLA or very expensive from Ferrari if you can find it. Drew
Careful, the way the ends attach are different from carbed to injected if memory serves me correctly. Mine are still fine and say ferrari on them. If you find a source let us know.
Both the ends on my 1979 BB512 take a strut mount shaft. I think you are right, the slower injected cars take a ball mount on each end.
Drew, After having the deck lid fall on my head too many times, I've got a clean solution using readily available parts. It will take me a bit to dig up the info, but total parts came to less than $50. Regards, David
David, Please let me know. They are still available but at around $220 each. I try to keep the car as original as possible but some of this stuff just is not worth it when there are good operational alternatives available.
Drew, I just e-mailed you an order from McMaster-Carr for the parts you'll need. In addition to the order, you need 20 8mm flat washer washers, 4 8mm wave washers and 4 8x1.25mm nylock nuts. If you don't have this hardware om hand, I'll send it to you in the morning. You need this extra hardware to position the new strut ends on the mounting studs. Aside from the already-great info and potential sources, you can consider a rebuild of your originals (also doing Daytona, Pantera, et al "Corte Cosso" brand rebuilds) you can try http://strutwise.com/index.php Best wishes and let us know. For most of us, this need is not a question of 'if' but 'when'.
Good day Drew, I, too, have used LS Technologies for my struts. Here is a link to the thread where I posted my experience with them (I did not start the thread, but added to it) http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=95119 Cheers, Sam
David, That's perfect. Just what the doctor ordered. The failing struts that are currently on my car are aftermarket and I have the same washer setup as in your photo's. One of the better parts placed I calld had them in stock at $212 each or $424 total vs. $41. Hudson and Sam thanks for the links. If mine were original I would consider having them rebuilt. Thanks again. Drew
Hey hey HEY NOW!!!!! You CAN turn your monitor over for proper reading of Northern Hemisphere threads, ya know.
OOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!! I was hoping that that wasn't what you meant. Haven't had that happen yet (knock my ol' noggin). I usually keep the cover open in the garage so they are always extended when in "storage" mode, to lessen the constant pressure on the seals. Lessons learned from other cars, you might say.
Good day Paul, I can't wait! It is great to see your guy's cars... no too mention having our own "ferrari chat session" (over food and beers) as it were ! It is also very interesting to see the slight differences in the cars, as it hits home how hand-built these cars were. See you tomorrow! Do I need to bring the cognac ? Cheers, Sam
I have cognac and brandy, Ill have a few swigs for sure. I hope the car meets your standards! My car's very different from Angelo's as you'll see tomorrow. P.
David, Just go to the McMaster-Carr web site and punch in those number and quantities...and you should be all set. Just in case your stut mounting points are not exactly in the same position as mine, exert great caution the first time you close the deck lid. You don't want to "bend" the deck lid... Regards, David
Just a final note to close the thread. The struts David suggested were a perfect fit and the force is correct; $47 delivered. Thanks David.
Update; Finally got around to installing the struts. Noticed the hole inside the rod end/eyelet leaves a big gap between it and the 8mm bolt. Called Mcmaster-Carr and they are sending me ones with a smalled ID. .32" as opposed to .39" of the 6465K27 This part # is 6465K63 We'll see how it works and let you all know. Ive got lots of spare washers and Nylock nuts if needed.
There was some confusion on my part with the struts. On my car , an 81 BB, the strut mounting bolt/clevis bore has a 10mm diameter. The retaining nut is 8 mm. so the shoulder of the bolt necks down to 8mm from 10. OK? Take one of the easy to access upper bolts off before you order to verify yours. So what I needed were 10mm diameter washers, both flat and wave washers and a 8mm nut. The 6465K27 eyelets work just fine even though just a tad loose which is probably a good thing to allow for movement of the strut as the lid is opened and closed. Also on the passenger side lower strut mount; access for the strut removal was blocked by an aluminum plate riveted to the frame. First I removed the upper strut bolt. Then I drilled the 2 forward most panel rivet heads off and lightly bent the plate up allowing the loose strut to slide off the lower mounting bolt. $10 for a pop rivet gun and 3/16 rivets to refasten plate. Drivers side access was OK. Crazy hand made cars. The old struts were completely flat. The new struts are amazing.
