After being "unplugged" for a while - either by being swamped here at work - we have been SUPER busy here with either production or being in meetings - AND my home computer died a month ago.
Finally got a minute here to update everyone on my 07-08 Christmas/NewYears project.
My largest undertaking to date. An eyepopping 36" by 48" oil on canvas of Kimi in an early-2007 car. Yes, this needs a BIG wall... :)
But theres a major twist: This was 85% executed with a medium sized pallet knife.. as opposed to a brush. I wanted this to be a very textural painting not a photo-rendering. What a blast that was. Such a refreshing change from the last project - the tightly painted "360 Reflections" watercolour.
That along with colour choices and/or changes, enhance the impact far beyond a photograph.

I took photos along the way knowing i would get a thread going here sooner or later...

Also, this is planned to be a 'one of two'. The other being Massa, which will be started soon (thread to come), to go to the left of Kimi so they are facing each other. A diptych of sorts, as the images dont run together but they are obviously related.

Enjoy... and comments are welcome and appreciated...

here are the first couple of steps...
the faded background is most of the where the brush did get used, as i wanted the contrast with the car and the background to recede as much as possible. The rest was feathering some edges and some mandatory details.

Glad to see you're back among us! Sorry to hear about your home computer. PM me. I might have a line on an Mac.
Looks to be another amazing endeavour. Certainly off to a great start.
The two paintings side by side will be quite a sight.
    Look forward to the updates.

    Good to be back...
Yeah, the 2 hanging together should have quite a "presence" in a room.
Working large like this is great... really enjoying it.

btw, thanks for the help with the Mac.

It's so great to watch you and ... what is his username? bugattiart? creating your masterpieces. Already looks fantastic, make sure to post a picture of the paintings hanging in a room when they are finished so we can get an impression of the real dimensions :)

Yes, Bugattiart, or Carsten Christian, does some incredible ink artworks. Is it a tech pen he uses or a magic wand?... i cant tell... :)
He is in the middle of one amazing 348 on a parallel thread...

will-do on the hanging pictures. I will have to take down some pieces to do it.. i only have a couple walls that could handle them size-wise... :)

thanks for the encouragement... more steps soon...

    Very impressive Grant, :)

Although different from your other works Grant, I'm confident that you will make another masterpiece out of this as well!
Looking forward to the updates! :)

And BTW: Thanks Grant, I suspect my tech pen sometimes does not know that it is "only a tech pen"!!! ;) :)

    Thanks... very kind.
we are getting closer... more bodywork and beginnings of the helmet.

sorry for the glinting highlites.. took the photos late and the flash does strange things with the wet, textural paint.

    Incredible!!!
The visor is really vibrant. Really has lots of 'punch' :)
Is that what you meant by colour intensity?
Keep them coming. Love every step!

Very nicely done once again. I enjoy your threads immensely.
Which do you enjoy more? The watercolours or the oil paintings?
I am fervently looking forward to seeing this paintings completion.
    Thank-you for posting these.

    i'm back... again.
sorry for the delay... was away for work all last week and still nothing at home yet...

thx... "punch" is what i am driving for, kicking up the colour intensity a few notches.
Vibrant. Thats the key word that i am keeping in my head while painting.

    thx again...

Hey Tony! Nice to hear from you again. I enjoy bringing them to y'all :)
As for which i enjoy more... tough call... i have been doing watercolours for ALOT longer - years... well.. decades now... (yikes) so i can control them alot better right now. A lot more done thru pure "instinct", while with the oils i have to experiment to get the effect i want... that can be kind of tedious. But i do enjoy the learning process and the chance to try something new and work thru it...

thx for posting... and for the encouragement...
