There is a bill that the Washington State Legislature is trying to pass in Olympia that, if successful, will directly add huge costs to our vehicle license fees. The bill is SB 6900 and it adds an "engine displacement" fee to the vehicle license tabs upon renewal.

The fee has a varied amount depending on the size of the vehicle's engine:

    Engine Size (liters) Rate Schedule:

    Up to 1.9 $0
    2.0 - 2.9 $70
    3.0 - 3.9 $225
    4.0 - 4.9 $275
    5.0 - 5.9 $325
    6.0 - 7.9 $400
    8.0 or over $600

For each car & truck that you own, calculate the rate by matching the engine size in liters to the dollar amount. Add the amounts for each vehicle and you'll see that the average two car family will be paying $500+ every year in "displacement fees" on top of the normal license fees. If you have three vehicles, you'll be paying even more. The average family is already struggling with the high cost of gasoline, electricity, food and everything else, and our lawmakers want us to pay more, thinking we have unlimited deep pockets. Now is the time to be very vocal against this bill.

Here's the web page for the bill where you can read the text:

    I have 3 cars = 2 x 225 + 1 x 325 = $775. I drive them no more than 12000 miles a year because i work out of my house.

I average 20MPG in one I drive 8000 miles per year; 16 MPG in one I drive 4000 miles per year and 14 MPG in one I drive 4000 miles per year. That's an integrated average of 17.5 MPG That means I burn 914 gallons of gas a year. That also means a tax on gas of 82 CENTS A GALLON!!!!! DOES ANYBODY THINK THEY COULD PASS AN 86 CENT A GALLON GAS TAX???

So, let's see-- first, you guys can't wash your own cars, and now you have to pay per liter for displacement? Not my kind of place.

All kidding aside, why can't politicians understand that a gas tax is a much more efficient way to social engineer fuel efficiency?

So, for those of us that have numerous cars that we collect but rarely drive, we should be penalized for owning them. Boy I love this state more and more each day...

I wrote an email to my representatives anyway, and I'd recommend doing the same - it doesn't hurt to remind them of what you think, just in case they decide to revisit this in the future.

Wrote and heard back from both of my local house representatives as well, the bill appears to have died in the senate committee and the deadline is this afternoon at 5, both told me in the e-mail that they agrees and will vote no should it does make it to the house.

You can bet that someone will try it again though. It might be time to see that the sponsors of that one get voted out of office.
Three Seattle metro area reps, one east side and one Vancouver. At least none from Central or Eastern wa.

For anyone who thinks this kind of bill is dead, is dead wrong. They (the legislature) are shelving about 80% of their eco-nazi bills until the next election is over. They don't want the Republicans to have too much ammo against them in the next election cycle. All I can say is we get what we deserve for electing and re-electing the same damn socialists into power.

Ladies & Gentlemen, I, propose that we invetigate what it takes to set up organize a political action committee to represent us when this type of legislation comes up, where we don't find out after the fact but can work intelligently and effictively for/against them.

I've never taken on such an endeavor, but I've recently become much more passionate about politics in general and the fact that we increasingly see non-sensical legislature, taxes and money spent that are counter-productive to the advacement of our society... is disturbing (ok, I may not have provided a rational, facts-based argument, but I am trying to be "inspirational" so I don't need to include facts, just to motivate the "mob" :) )

All kidding aside, who's with me?

    Dear David,

Thank you for taking the time to write me about your strong feelings 6900, which would establish vehicle engine displacement and emissions fees. Not only am I on the Transportation committee, but I also drive the same roads that you do, and realize that there is still work that we can do to make roads and fees better for Washingtonians. I am working hard with Governor Gregoire and legislative leaders to draft legislation that with help make this a reality.

You will be glad to hear that this bill did not advance during the legislative session, and it appears that it will remain in committee.
If this concept surfaces again, however, I will keep your comments in mind.

You may follow the progress of proposed legislation by going to the
following link: <http://aor.leg.wa.lcl/home/default.aspx> . If you
need additional information, I encourage you to contact me.

Again, I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts on this important measure. It is always helpful to hear from people who are directly involved with this issue.

It is a pleasure to serve the people of the 5th Legislative District.

    Sincerely,
    Cheryl

    BILL: 6900 (Against)

SUBJECT: This represents an outrageous TAX increase

    MESSAGE:

Notwithstanding the questionable constutionality of this Bill, for me who drives 3 cars a total of 16000 miles per year with an average MPG of 17.5 or 914 gallons per year my cost is $750 or effectively an 86 cent a gallon gas TAX INCREASE. The Environmentalist Talibans know they'd never get away with an 86 cent a gallon increase so they are trying to sneak this in the back door! Unfortunately Al Gore has misinformed a large portion of the population who are willingly gullable to accept the outrageous claims of the effects of "MAN CAUSED" global warming because it fits their "Minimalist" agenda not unlike the way Al Quida and the Taliban want to bomb us back into the stone age. Its important to recognize that this form of Extreme Thinking is a "Religion" for the "Extreme Environmentalist Movement". There is no irrifutable scientific proof of Man Made Global Warming any more than there is Proof of the second coming of Christ. At this point it is simply a Religious belief! Lets keep the Environmental Religions out of Government and reject this SB6900 for what it is, an outrageous TAX of 86 cents a gallon based on a religion.

NOTE: We are 99% sure that this constituent is in your district

Sound like she is for the bill to me.

I got an e-mail today from the last of the 3 members in my district. State Senator McAuliffe also stated that she will not support this bill.
