Steve Wakefield's intro in his 'Classic Driver' email: It's all very confusing. One minute everything's green, and now it's all brown. I'm referring to car colours, so I suppose it should really be 'brown is the new silver' or something, but it's difficult to resist an eco-reference at motor show time. So, at Geneva, on the Ferrari stand there was a new selection of brown leather interiors, plus browny-grey metallic paintwork. Aston Martin followed suit with a Cocoa metallic plus chocolate interior V8 Vantage in its 'private' viewing area. And so on, culminating in the magnificent Bugatti Veyron Fbg by Hermès with its café au lait paintwork contrasted with a black that seemed to have, well, a hint of bronze to it. What next? A return to the tracks for the hue, first seen on the Hexagon of Highgate F1 Brabham in the 1970s? Honda didn't do very well in 2007 with a car painted in the livery of the Earth, so perhaps they should go one step further and try the colour of earth itself. Makes Steve McQueen seem prescient with his maronne 250 GT Lusso. I've always liked black, dark blue and other darker hues on Ferraris (I even like the Enzo in black, and I don't like the Enzo in general.) But I can't think of many I'd actually buy in earth tones... Would you buy a 'cocoa metallic' Ferrari? I can see it Aston Martins, being the starchy Brit of the sporting car world, or for the bigger Ferrari cruisers (599/612), but I'm not sure this trend would work well for the sports cars (F430 and the unborn F149). I can't tell from the pic that either car is brown. A truely brown car would be a never in my book. Too many memories of bad Toyota wagons and Nissan 280Zs.
A reflection of the 'anti-conspicuous' movement - or a throwback to the muted, Earth-tone colors used on many non-red Vintage GT cars. I still prefer my Ferraris R-E-D, though....
Those two fashionistas with the Bullfighter's Ferrari picture are enough to make me want to put Mercury on my list. Excuse me, Trixie is calling the Mark Five...
I don't think Wakefield was talking about plain brown (like the old Porsche "togo brown" color) -- I think he's talking about colors with earth tone metallic baked in.
I like the original Marrone MET (Metalic Brown/Dark Bronze) on my 308. It is a bit unique and I wanted DIFFERENT. The more I see it the more I like it. In the sun it really looks nice. But, you'll either like it or hate it.
Like Al Gore's squadron of hybrid Escalades? Sorry, not even Steve McQueen's Lusso could make this cool.
I like the color, but had a hard time rationalizing such a subtle tone on such a bold body shape. Frankly, though, after seeing a few thousand red ones cars like yours are the ones I pay attention to. That Lusso is cool. I've seen them in red, dark red and silver, but that color is amazing and heightens the vintage appeal, IMO. On a modern GT, like the 550/575, I'm not sure it would work as well.
Brown would be my last choice for just about any car, but certain Ferraris - such as the 250 Lusso - are so gorgeous that they even look good brown. Sayin' I wouldn't turn one down just because it's brown, but given a choice of (almost) any other color, I'd rather have that.
I would not be interested in a brown anything Ferrari. Red, TDF, Black.... To me those are the best Ferrari colors. There is a green 360 spider on Ebay if you want an Eco-colored Ferrari. No takers at a steep discount compared to other cars of similar year and mileage. BT
Green should be limited by law to old British cars. In fact I think there's something in the Magna Charta to that effect.
I spec'd my 599 in nero daytona with WB508. Metallic black with a subtle chocolate undertone. Matched it with a "natural interior" ( Cuoio). Finished it with black inserts on Daytona seats with special stitching. During cloudy days or parked in the garage you really don't see the brown. Its kind of a shame . But when you have a sunny day you can really pick up the chocolate and black. Combined with the natural brown interior with black accents the effect makes quite a statement. I'd post some pics but I don't think the camera can really pick it up. I've tried and all I get is the black with a touch of the daytona peeking thru.
I think brown is ok, not that I would get one but sure is different. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
